Man jumps off 27-meter high waterfall to rescue a drowning man

A man fell into a river on the Swiss-French border.

Another man, seeing the first's need, jumped off the 27-metre high waterfall of Saut-du-Doubs, into the river, to rescue the first. He succeeded.

The rescuer is

a former american lifesaver, a specialist for emergency rescue in the USA.

It is a lovely spot not very far from us- he would have probably asked other people, who would have confirmed it is deep enough - very strong waterfalls like the Doubs have been slowly eroding the rock for centuries.

He is certainly held as a hero around here.

As an ex lifeguard who was apparently familiar with the area, I would think it safe to say that he knew what he was doing.

Hats off to him, as it was still a major risk!

40m (27m actually) was the jump, not riverdepth.

According to the German version of the article he had literally zero clue about the river's depth or whether he would hit rocks.

Quite a bit more than zero, I'd wager. Most waterfalls of that type (direct fall from a considerable height) fall into a very deep body of water, all rock having been eroded away over centuries, if not millennia. Most -- but not all. Still, a fair bet that it was safe to jump.

Hello everyone!! Bloody Fool here (according to Medea Fleecestealer). He is correct I could of killed myself, but i didn't. It is totally possible that there could of been rocks or debris in the water where I jumped but it is also possible that there was nothing (which is how it was). I have jumped of cliffs before I know that waterfalls like this are typically like how 22 yards explained. It was a risk I was willing to take so I didn't have to stand by and watch a man die. I felt confident in my ability to properly jump safely into the water and save this mans life. Do I think I'm a bloody fool? No. I am happy to know that my first instinct is to help a fellow man in need because at the end of the day all we have is each other.

Congratulations on being an unbloodied fool - but as you pointed out yourself you considered the risk of rocks etc before you jumped in - hence shag all instinct involved.
