Marriage and birth rates fall

If you look at municipal, or even regional level, depopulation is already happening. If the economic activity that sustained people doesn’t exist anymore, not much can be done.

Nearly three quarters (74%) of the earth’s population reside in countries where fertility is around or below the replacement level.

Around 15% of the world’s population lives in a country with low fertility of 1.6 to 1.8 children per woman. This includes a diverse range of countries like Brazil, Mexico, the United States and Sweden.

Another 26% — about 1 in 4 people — lives in a country with very low fertility at 1.5 children or fewer per woman. Such countries include China, South Korea and Spain.

Mankind leaving without even a wimper

Local depopulation is real, but at the national level countries still have options to adapt to a shrinking population.
What many countries currently seem to be doing is just kicking the can down the road whilst fundamentally changing their countries.

The issue is not depopulation or a falling birth rate. The issue is that people are/feel threatened by cultures that are foreign to them. This is thoroughly understandable and the reason for the rise of populist parties that promise to solve the “problem”. Are their cures worse than the disease?

This is the point, regardless of all the wishfull thinking about the brotherhood of man.
People fo the math and see that at some point a critical mass is acchieved and the influx will outbreed the natives.
Look at history, this has happened everywhere and in all periods.

Really? With the exception of the North America, South Africa and Australia / NZ, where has “the influx outbred the natives”?

“Outbreed the natives”? Take Celtic Britain. Raped and pillaged by the Vikings. Colonised by the Normans. The invading hordes did not outbreed the natives. They decimated them and then interbred.
We are not doomed to repeat history. We can learn from it. But if you cling to outdated ideas of what “your culture” is, then you are going to fail. This is what history tells you.

What would you propose countries do with the “can” right now?

There are usually two approaches to any issue - the carrot or the stick. Right now countries have been offering the carrot: “perks” like more parental leave, better tax incentives, baby bonuses and at least one country has held a day off where folks were supposed to get busy in the bedroom making more babies.

I guess the stick would be taking away these costly parental/child benefits, and making access to contraceptives and abortion more expensive. Hmm, the Republicans might be on to something!

Already a big portion of the world, but I would add the Franks in Rome, South America, middle America, Normans in England, but a bit of back and forth there, the Völkerwanderung, Kelvian Rus, oh quite a long list.
Mongols, Hittites… take your pick.

Nice way of thinking, if we were only not such a bunch of tribal monkeys.

I support parental leave, tax incentives for young families, childcare etc, etc, but less to raise fertility rates than to increase social equality. Otherwise, having children is going to become the preserve of the rich.
Ironically, this has not happened world-wide as it is generally the poorer countries with the highest birth rates.

There is a saying … money does not buy happiness, but it does help look for it in more places.

the poor have more time at hand to entertain themselves at home. Take Covid era as an example, may be?

Exactly, the question is. To which tribe do you belong? Mine is the liberal woke clan. This is worth fighting for.

Wrong question, the proper one is who the invaders belong to.

Hamtranck, MI, is showing the way. In 2022 its city council became all-muslim (after the first muslim mayor got eleted in 2021), the following year it banned the pride flag on city grounds.

You ignore integration so the “influx” becomes indivisible.

Neanderthals breeding with Homo Sapiens
Catholics with Jews
Africans with Asians
White people with everybody

The USA has a long tradition of allowing religious minorities to set up their own separate towns. Religious tolerance is one thing, religious domination another. A secular town/state/country is fundamental to liberal values.

I do believe that the only time an influx of people into a host country went well-ish and peacefull enough were the Franks when they migrated to Gaul which led to the complete dismantling of the estabished Roman Empire which was then replaced by the Merowingians.
Incidently the native tribes of Gaul were by that time totally obliterated.
Asterix and Obelix never stood a chance.

I think stronger and more effective carrots are needed, particularly when the incentives are currently too weak against the high cost of living. Someone else also mentioned cultural messaging that values children and family over careerism which I agree with.

Also, in many European countries I think immigration needs to be stricter, with far less intake from groups who are more likely to become a net drain on society.

In the U.S., in 2015, 15.1% of children (under age 18) identify as multiracial. This represents millions of youth, and the multiracial demographic is the fastest-growing child population in the country

According to the U.S. Census, the multiracial population grew 276 percent between 2010 and 2020.

As 3Wishes mentioned, carrots and sticks.

Governments offer cash or tax rebates, but don’t yet offer a reduction to for non-monetary barriers. Some years ago, a work colleague got a “suggestion” from the building management to move to a larger apartment. One of the neighbors saw her pregnant and reported to the building management. This kind of policing of children is crazy.

The expectations of silence from children are also a bit too much. Maybe I’m crazy but I’m not bothered by children in public spaces. I find peace in thinking that the poor parent has to deal with that 24/7. I leave the train or the restaurant after a few mins, parents can’t do that, so my best wishes. Society could be a bit more accommodating to children.

Society also fails to offer something to women between child-rearing years and retirement time. There might something like starting to work or a career later in life, but never heard about this. FFS!, if we’re going to retire at 70, there’s nothing wrong with starting at 40.
