McDonald's birthday party

When I was a kid, the local McDonald’s had a table which looked a bit like the below:

We rarely went to McDonald’s but I remember we went once and there was a kids birthday party there which I wanted more than anything to have too.

Yesterday, I was at McDonald’s and I saw they had a birthday party offer. Curious, I went to the website and saw:

Birthday Party for Small Kids

Unofficial price recommendation. Available in all participating restaurants. Age 4 and up. From CHF 119 for 90 minutes* for 9 children. A surcharge of CHF 13 per child applies for each additional guest.

Includes 1 Happy Meal® per person, decoration, cake, entertainment, and surprises for 9 children (1 birthday child and 8 guests). The birthday child pays nothing.

“The birthday child pays nothing.”? Why would the child pay anything? Haven’t you anyway already paid with the 119 price? Anyone have an idea what that is supposed to mean?

Maybe these days you send out your party invitations with a booking form and an invoice?

I take it to mean that if there are 9 children invited plus the child having their birthday, they count 9 children, not 10.

That’s what I would have thought too had it not specifically said the offer is for 1 birthday child + 8 guests.

Ah, I missed that, you’re right, then 119 refers to the cost for 8 children (CHF14.9/child) plus one “for free”, I would say. I mean it’s just their floor price.

Maybe they calculate with 15 for cake plus decorations, that would give 8*13+15=119

Either way I think it’s a modest price. But of course their point with this isn’t immediate profit, it’s about planting mental hooks so they become returning customers (ideally for life).
