I have started preparing the documents for my naturalization process and one of the things I need to tick is about the military service.

So, I am an EU citizen, coming from a country with a 1-year compulsory military service, which I completed about 11 years ago. Does this mean that I am exempt from military obligations in CH, or do I have to fulfil military obligations here as well, if I receive the citizenship?

Additionally, in my application, I am going to include my 2 year old son. If we get the citizenship, by the time he gets 18, he will be dual citizen and if things are as they are now, he will have to do a 1 year military service in the country where I was born. So what would happen to him in this case? Would he have to perform military service in the country where he lives at that time? Would he be able to choose which one he wants? Or will he have to do both?

If you have fulfilled your military service requirements in your country of origin you are exempt from military service in Switzerland.

As for you son it will depend on the rules of the other country. If he is obliged to do military service there even though he is resident abroad he will be exempt from the Swiss service. If he doesn’t have to do the service in that country then I believe he can choose where he does it but if he doesn’t do the service in the other country he will be obliged to do it here or pay the military tax.
