Missing my chilli heat ‘fix’

Hi everyone. Quick update: It seems that the Mexican shops in Zurich do seem to have fresh Habeneros, however, it's a bit of a trek for me from Zug. I was walking through Metalli in Zug and they had a farmers market. Hey presto, they had Habeneros. I took them all. A friend found some small hot chillis at Top CC and bought them for me. I dried them, so now have a small supply to tide me over.

Hi everyone. Quick second update:Went to Zurich today for a day trip. Discovered that news of a pandemic and global recession had not reached the good people of Zurich with packed outdoor dining and cigar smoke wafting in the air.

Anyway, I digress. I went to Globus and Jelmoli and both have a good selection of chillis, including habanero and at the same price I used to pay at COOP. (Globus actually cheaper)

Who would have thought?

My dad grows Carolina Reapers and Habaneros, so my way is to dry them and make some nice powder that last a long long time

Yep, I do the same. I also make a hot sauce

Read about this chili farm in AG the other day: https://ruesstalchili.ch/

They go to several markets during the year. May be worth to find them.

Some useful tips on growing chillies

I found that the best way was to freeze them and simply raspel off what you need.

There's a skill to this... that I've yet to discover. Something about letting them dry out between watering..

I use https://fridakahlo.ch/ to buy all kinds of dried chillies and then I make a fermented hot sauce for two weeks. You just need to add a few fresh veggies in there as well for flavor, but also to start the fermentation and you'll end up with one of the best possible hot sauces.

Hi Nick,

My name is Maria and I am an Australian who has been living in Switzerland for many years.

I am also a chili lover and a farmer of my own chilis for several years. I have been growing exotic types on a small scale which gives your taste buds a true run for their money.

I'm interested in building a "chili community" where we share chilis and seeds and growing tips etc. I would be very happy to share some of my chilis with you.

I live in Opfikon and enjoy having my oldest plants until the end of October where they are normally stored against the winter cold. This year though, I am looking for an alternative as I would like to continue growing new varieties during the winter.

If you're interested in some of my chilis then I would gladly share them with you. Just contact me and let me know.

All the best and have a nice afternoon

Maria

I grow:

Capsacin Gambiensae

Peppa Peach

Hungarian Wax

Aji Limon

Can provide seeds of any of these, but the gambiensae is the only one I can guarantee to be not-cross bred (as it's grown indoors, in a filtered grow tent). All the others will have a bit of everything in their genes

Anyone willing to sell me some Jalapenos? I grew many many peppers this year and they're all extremely tame (no heat at all). I suspect because of overwatering?

El Maiz on Josefstrasse certainly will.

Jalapeños are the only ones that we haven’t had fruit yet this year.

Aren't Jalapenos also extremely tame to begin with?

Hello, not interest in growing chilis, but as a Mexican that likes to cook I can share the knowledge on stews, soups and sauces.

Not the good ones. I used to stuff them with cream cheese and cover with bacon at BBQs, most of the hot sauce people started crying.

I grew a whole bunch, but unfortunately, they're not spicy at all.

Btw, the key is to starting them indoors under a grow light in December. Bring them outside in a tomato cage in April. The only problem, I've been told, is to remove the cage so they will get spicier.

I see they now do delivery. Time to order a kilo of jalapeños

If you’re still in Zug (according to your profile) - Buuregarte Boog farm in Hünenberg sell Habaneros. They also have a stall in Metalli on Saturdays. You can also order what you need.

Anyone found any spicy indian ready made sauces locally in Switzerland, Germany or France?

I just ate the last Tesco vindaloo sauce (more like madras level tbh) and probably won't be back to the UK to restock for a while.

I'm not holding out much hope...
