Moving to Basel. What will this Salary cover?

Example: Little Blessings, 8.30 to 12.30 three days a week. Approx. 40 Chf a session. They take children from approx. 18 months.

Have you thought of a Tagesmutter? On your salary, the Baselland rate is 10 Chf an hour per child (or at least it was last year when I used one). Reduced rates can apply for lower salary brackets but I would not think you qualify for this. It is more flexible in that you pay for when the children are there - thus getting around the fact that at full time daycare you pay for the day whether or not your children are there from 8am.

Still, your best bet to reduce the childcare would be to try to consolidate your working hours better so that you can have - say a day or two a week when no childcare is required.

And the 3 year old will be in school in 18 months/2 years - so a Tagesmutter is a great resource for care around the short school hours.

Here is a useful Baselland canton publication with links to places for different types of childcare that will all work out less expensive than the traditional private full daycare model. http://www.baselland.ch/fileadmin/baselland/files/docs/fkd/fff/handb/kinderbetreuung.pdf

Link to the price and tarif information for using a Tagesmutter in the Oberere Baselbiet area of Baselland (this is the area I live in which is why I have this information but it is useful for information purposes)

3 kids under 3? I would seriously consider living across the border in France. Yes, you will most likely need a car, but child care is affordable and with 3 kids, you won't pay much tax either.

Hey, (or, rather 'hay'), horse is great to eat!

Tom

Not true, if you both earn 75k, or one earns 150k, the taxes are the same.

Unless you aren't married, in which case it's better to each earn 75k.

Tom

And taxes, another CHF 2500/month or so (depends on canton)

And is the 150k netto or brutto? If brutto, then another 1k/month in various taxes, pension, etc.

Tom

Agree with this statement, ecole maternelle for children who are dry, is free. Also you could employ the services of an Assistant Maternelle, as I do when I work.

Plenty of villages that are near the border, certainly something to consider.

Coffee or tea, Masta ?

... a detailed breakdown is something you get from a relocating agent. You can afford it.

So.. if 150,000chf is a great salary for a family(shared income) then how about 70,000chf gross for a family..? I am taking a job in Zug and have 2 children and husbad(not working)... Is the tax around 15% or 20% (including deductions at source) for me.??

Can we LIVE here in Cham, or will we be existing?? Is 70,000chf a good salary for a family of four?

Please help.. we dont eat out or have expensive tastes.. but want to join in fun things!.. Can we do it.. comfortably?

Life will be tight on 70K. Please see the thread I posted early for more about cost-of-living:

FAQ: Is CHF100'000 a good salary?

Hope this helps

It's not a good salary, it's a little above average earnings, it's about the same as earning £35k in the UK, living inside the M25. Nothing special, not sure it's worth moving here for that.
