NEW to switzerland (neuchatel or bern?)

40 minutes from Lausanne Gare to Neuchatel Gare, similar time if you drive, too.

The taxes are different everywhere around Lausanne. Pully is 0.69, Lutry is 0.62. There's a place called Buchillon (close to Aubonne), that's the best place in terms of tax; the coefficient is 0.14; incredible. Downtown Lausanne is 0.83, not very low I would say.

But in general living in Neuchatel will cost you less in terms of tax (Neuchatel coefficient is 130%, whereas Vaud coefficient is 151%).

Why not get temporary accommodation in Neuchatel and see you you get on? If you hate it you can always move to Lausanne or wherever later?

BTW the train station in Neuch is at the top of the town, most places of work at bottom- so add 15 mins.

Odile you are putting up a serious fight for Neuchatel!!!! I'm going to look into it seriously when I know if I actually do get the job!!! I guess I will first look and see what the cost relation is between:

Flat-Taxes-Train Ticket / Fun / Having to Travel

Thanks a lot for your generous help....I've just rang the recruiter and they said they should have some news by tomoz...I havnt got any more fingernails to bite!

Later!

How much of a party animal are you? I think Lausanne is definitely the party town, but I manage to amuse myself here in Neuch. Neuchâtel is really gorgeous, but then again I think Bern is nice too. I think linguistically you'll have a MUCH easier time in Neuch, though.

Lots of people live in Neuchâtel and work in Bern; the other way round is more unusual.

Living in Bern while working in Neuchâtel would "isolate" you a bit from your work colleagues in terms of meeting them and their families outside of the office - another possible barrier to integration in addition to the language.

If you're into mountain activities in a big way, that would be a reason for maybe choosing Bern. Every Sunday morning, I curse the extra 45 minutes it takes to get to the Bernese Oberland from here compared to Bern, and every Sunday evening I curse the same extra 45 minutes before I can get home and into the bath

Yes a good bath is welcoming after a long hike....however, I think the options have turned to Neuchatel or Laussane...the Bern option is dismissed!
