Noise rule in Switzerland

Yes I did call the police.

"Parlez vous anglais?"

"Non" followed by dead silence.

I threw together a phrase that did get me a different person on the emergency line, but the new policemans' English was worse than my French. The burglar was beginning to look amused and actually did offer to speak to them on my behalf. I did not want to be reported as a crazy American who had broken into his house, so I declined his generosity.

Luckily, I am a recently retired from the United States Marine Corps and I could best be described as "Man Sized". I also have two very large dogs that are exclusive members of the cantonal dangerous breeds list.

Had I been a woman and not had these dogs , the outcome may have been very different.

In the end, I was forced to let him go on his way. This was definite motivation to become more proficient in the French language.

hi, i live across from a farm, and the cow begs drive me mad, i try to ignore it and think oh thats nice but boy can the bells drive mad, all day and night, wish the cows would keep still!!!

It is not the cows fault blame the farmers for putting the bells on the poor cows. It is the cows i feel sorry for, having the bells around there necks, they have to move, and eat grass. If the farmers did not put the bells on the cows neck then you would have no noise

yes i think i will stick the bells on the farmer!!

I don't mind the sound of cow bells, but it seems that wedding season has started as my local church bells were going non stop today.

Hi,

Here is something migh help some of us living in Basel.

So, what I did, I called the landlord and told her about the music. The floor is vibrating and the laptop is shaking on the coffee table (not kidding) for weeks!!!!

She told me she will come back to me since she has to think for a solution...

Anyway, I let the week pass, it was monday, last week.

On thursday, I had enough. I spend every afternoon of the week to run out of my flat to avoid the music. So, I did what you do in Canada when you want to have some information about some law and rules. You call the Police. They always have someone to give those informations.

The officer who answered me didn't speak english, and his french was very very limited. So instead to lose time to try to understand, he just told me he will send someone.....

I waited for them outside and was very happy to have a very well english speaking officer. I told him why I called and the mistake about showing up. They came in my flat, but of course, no music. I was embarassed but they told me something who made me feel much better.

The officer on the phone was able to heard the music!!! And it is recorded!!!!

They were ready to go straight to the neighbors. But I told them to not too, I was waiting for my landlord's answer. They were so nice with me, and they told me if the situation still going on, to call them again, they will show up with pleasure to stop that very very unreasonable level of music.

My landlord came back to me on friday, after I called her. I told her the story, and the fact I have 6 witnesses (one is a cop). The landlord doesn't want to lose anybody in the building (understandable) but it's make her taking no real action. She came with bad excuses like the lady downstair may have some ears problems (she doesn't heard her music, but a soft knock at the door???)etc, etc, etc.

I told her (I had no more patience left) If I heard the music again at that level, I'll call the cop. They will back me up on this one, since I'm in my rights. And they have a tape to prove it.

Since that day, last friday, I have no more music shaking my floor and my nerves...

I didn't want to go the police way, but it was, on this specific situation, my best move.

So to answer my own question, yes you can do something, if the noise is on an unreasonnable level. You should be able to be in your house and not heard the noise.

The first thing to do is to contact your landlord. If the landlord doesn't do anything about it, you can contact the police.

But first, you go to the landlord.

Hope this help others in the futur...

Nil

Didn't you think to go downstairs to the noisy neighbour yourself and ask them to turn the music down? That might have avoided the involvement of the police, the 6 witnesses and the landlady. Maybe your neighbour didn't realise he or she was being so loud?

Mmmmmmm.

I have over the years both here and in the UK approached neighbours directly from everything from barking dogs at 6am, keeping chickens illegally that woke me at dawn, bonfires on warm Saturday evenings when we had guests and our windows open, playing music at 2am, kids repeatedly kicking footballs into our garden etc etc.

Sometimes the offenders stopped what they were doing, sometimes they didn't. But it never improved relationships with the neighbours concerned and usually soured them for ever.

IMO it's much better to get an unbiased 3rd party in on it...

Think you missed steps 1 and 2 off your original post about this matter but, hey, we've got the full story now.

@Abfab: (not realising Nil had already been down to her neighbours) I think I would be vaguely irritated that someone first complained to the landlord then got the police involved without first perhaps knocking on my door and asking if I was aware how loud the music was. Of course, if you don't already know your neighbours you cannot know if they will overreact but I think most people are reasonable.

I would definitely be wary of neighbours whose first thought is to involve the landlord or, even worse, the police for something as simple as a noisy stereo.

A couple of weeks ago I had to literally bang with my fists on the door of the flat but one above us because the (actually really nice) guy was playing his music so building-shakingly loud he couldn't hear a soft knock. I was trying to put our little boy to sleep.

As it happens he was relaxing with an errm.. herbal cigarette and didn't realise the noise level was making his ears bleed. He apologised profusely and turned it OFF. I said he only had to turn it down to a lower level for an hour or so (after that our little boy could sleep with a brass band marching past his cot) but he was so embarrassed he switched it clean off.

This is in stark contrast to the couple who used to live immediately above us who were downright hostile when I asked them once to keep a check on the volume at 2.30 in the morning but the landlord turfed them out a couple of months later for trashing the place anyway.

I think it is key if you know your neighbours; noisy-dope-smoking but affable chap two floors above us knows us quite well so was willing to be reasonable. The flat trashing psychopaths kept themselves to themselves and predictably flew off the handle when someone complained.

I live above a restaurant and they have notions that they are in fact a club. I'm currently sitting two floors up from a "party", to which I was invited (on Friday night, so too short notice to escape) so I couldn't complain but considering the bass is giving me ear-pressure at this distance, I am definitely going to pass.

Anyone know what the legal situation is here? Because I'm starting to get seriously stressed at the constant noise, its been four hours of constant *boom boom boom boom*.

Welcome to my world with the bass.....

Sadly, I have no idea what is the rule with a restaurant... I guess, I do only guess, they also have to respect a certain reasonnable level...

Is it like that all day long? And in the evening? Until when?

I wonder what their license is for? I'd imagine they'd need to have a license/permit for a club as opposed to a restaurant. Maybe check with your local government office and see what they have to say?

My sympathies, I'd go bonkers with that - and I love my loud music, but not someone else's!

To me it is amazing that people are oblivious to the notion that loud music at 2 in the morning might not be everyones cup of tea. I have a neighbor that loves to crank up trance music late on Saturday nights, like right now.

I also love loud music. When I work out, I love music so loud it drowns out everything else.

I am also so amazed at the sound quality of modern headphones. One of my neighbors confided in me that I have a reputation of being eerily quiet. What they don't know is that I am enjoying whatever music I like, as loud as I like, and no one else has any idea.

I must admit, I have missed entire conversations with my wife while she discusses what she calls "the Honeydew list".

Honey do this, honey do that.........

I just smile and nod.

Hi

I have looked through the threads and couldn't find anything on this one except noise in general - I hope someone can help.

Can you one tell me if I am allowed to do my Gardening on a Sunday? We live in a detached house with no house within 15 metres of ours. When I mention gardening I mean raking, digging, planting, cutting. I understand I cannot cut the grass or use any other machinery.

I would be grateful if someone could clarify this for me. Many thanks

As my Dad always says:

You can do what you want until someone says you can't.

Edit: I see from your profile that you are English. It is, therefore, completely unnecessary to ever ask whether you are allowed to do anything in a foreign country.

I've done non-mechanical gardening work on a Sunday without an problems. It's the noise that's the issue, not the working. ( I did once use my electric drill during a weekday lunch time, but I think I got away with it ).

Schwyz is a very catholic kanton. They don't like it if you work on the seventh day, you should be in church! And then afterwards spending the whole day feeling guilty for your sins. That way you can start the week with a fresh slate.

Not in Kanton Schwyz.

Wow I feel really lucky... you can generally hear a pin drop in my part of town, and I live in 8001! Mind you i'm next to a synagogue so the only real noise I hear is on a saturrday afternoon when all the jews are milling around for their weekly prayers and social groups.

My neighbours barely make a squeak, and I have come back half cut many, many times at silly times in the morning and had to flush the loo etc, and never had a single complaint. Guess i'm lucky.
