Hi, I am a Non-EU (Asian) citizen and my bf is swiss. We want to get married. I have already submitted all my documents to the zivilsamt in January and are now already in my country for verification. If someone had an experience of how long does the verification process take and we can have an approval for marriage. Please share your experience or any information on this matter.

Unfortunately, there’s no clear answer on this. The factors that influence the duration include: non-EU country of citizenship, and how quickly and accurately that country’s documents are issued, notarised and apostilled

whether that country’s document are typically very different from the Swiss equivalent documents

time to get translation done into a Swiss language or into English (if your Cantonal authorities accept English)

staff in the Swiss representative in that country, and how efficiently they work on the process of verification

frequency of diplomatic postage or courier services from that Swiss representative to the Cantonal immigration authorities in Switzerland

staff who work in the Cantonal immigration authorities, and how efficiently they work and how much of a staff shortage and caseload they have

your and your fiancé’s participation in properly and promptly submitting all the documentation, including readily re-submitting any you’ve already sent in, if ever you are asked to do so, and in paying any fees

after the immigration authorities have approved, the local Zivilstandsamt’s availability of the appointments for the marriage preparation meeting and then for the legal marriage ceremony itself.
In summary, I’ve never heard of all this taking less than a few months, and anything up to a year.

Well, all my documents are in english, that were submitted immediately to zivilsamt in January and the fees has been payed. The person responsible for my case in my country (India), verified all the documents and has submitted to the Swiss embassy in India. I have already submitted all the documents notarised and apostilled back in January. I am already working and living in Switzerland. They just asked for my documents , not my bfs (as he is swiss) . I just don't get whats the hold and a precise timeline for this verification process.

Nobody can tell you what the timeline is. You‘ll have to wait until it is done.

Your nationality is possibly the clue here. I do not know why, but I've seen many stories here on EF about how long the verification process takes in India. It's very slow.

Maybe someone who has gone through the process recently can describe what was done/requested/verified and the time it took.

You sound annoyed or stressed. And I can really empathise. It is a horribly drawn-out process with so many various steps. Unfortunately, it really is true, just as roegner wrote: Even the officials in the various departments find it complex, because each is dependent on the processess of the others, all of which are outside of their control.

As I've seen it, some such processes grind to a halt when each side thinks that they are waiting for something from the other side. In that event, it can sometimes help to phone and - without pressurising or demanding - simply enquire whether they have all the documents they need, or whether anything is outstanding, perhaps even from you. Sometimes, that makes someone open the file and find the cause of the delay.

I'm actually surprised that your fiancé has not had to submit any documents. In the cases of which I know the Swiss person also had to provide documentation of their marital status, their residence and their financial situation.

In your case, one thing comes to mind that might help: your partner (not you) could phone the Zivilstandsamt where you plan to marry, and say that you and he would like to make your marriage preparation appointment, and ask which documents they need from him and from you , to do that. He could set out your current situation (permit, work), explain how far your application has moved so far (dates, submissions), and ask whether they are waiting from any kind of confirmation from the immigration authorities and who should obtain this. If the person at the Zivilstandsamt happens to have a contact in another department, they might be kind enough to phone there to ask what is needed.

We have contacted zivilsamt and the embassy in my country. The authorities are not very helpful. It seems like they themselves have no clue whats going on. Waiting is the only option I am left with.
