Normal B Driver's Licence - What Scooter can I drive

Hi All,

So this would be my first post here and, presumedly like all others, I've got some questions.

Initially I was thinking to buy an e-bike ( until I get my car from back home / or just buy one here ) , but after consideration I decided to buy a scooter , so that me and the missus can go relatively easy from point A to B.

Also I saw that scooters , can be parked almost everywhere ( on the street ) and you do not need to pay anything ( like cars ). Please correct me if I am wrong.

So my big questions is : I have an EU driver's licence which has the main B category , but I also have an AM category on it. I would like a bigger scooter ( fit for 2 people ) and what CC can I drive legally in Switzerland ( 50 or 125 ) ?

I was just searching online for more info about what cc you can drive with a normal B license, and I didn't really understand, but I think you can drive up to 125 cc, but the KW is also limited.

If you have AM you can go up to 50cc. With cat B you still have to do courses to get cat A1.

No, you need to get an A1 for 125cc.

But if you have class B already, for an A1 you "only" need to do 12 hours school. No test needed.

A1 is max 125cc and max 11 kW. As far as I can see, a new B no longer gives access to a 50cc scooter, only a moped.

Category B entitles you to ride vehicles of category B1, F, G and M. ( See Art. 4 VZV )

The European AM allows you to ride: mopeds, scooters and light motor-powered with a maximum engine capacity of 50 cc or a maximum rated power equal to or less than 4 kW (electric motors) and whose maximum speed does not exceed 45 km/h.

Switzerland does not have a category AM. The equivalent to the European category AM is in Switzerland the restricted A1 category A1 (45 km/h). Theoretically this includes 125 ccm and up to 11 kW as long as the speed is restricted to 45 km/h. But so far I have only seen speed restricted 50 ccm. ( Art. 88a VZV )

Category M is motorized bicycle. That's max 50ccm, AND max 1 kW, AND max 30 km/h (or electric support up to 45 km/h). ( Art. 18 VTS )

If you convert an EU license with B and AM you should get a Swiss license with B and A1 (45 km/h). You will only get A1 (45 km/h) if AM is explicitly on your license. That you can ride scooters with B in some country is just a local national rule which does not apply abroad. To get an unrestricted A1 you will have to do a 12 hour basic training.
