If you have married or had kids in CH then you and the kids born in CH are in the registry. If you haven’t or if you came with a kid born outside of CH, then the timing depends on how quickly you are able to obtain a fresh copy of your birth certificate from your home country.

doing my naturalization process now in Canton Zug, while travelling quite a bit for work. I am curious how often / when I need to go to the different authorities in person? I thought only for the two conversations with the Gemeinde and Canton. But It seems there might also be other administrative things I need to do in person…
In ZH it was only once for the interview. Otherwise it’s just paying bills every few months.
In VD it was an interview with the retired policeman and the interview with the commune nationality committee. And paying the bills. That was a few years back and the rules and procedures have changed.
In Neuchâtel it’s only one interview, the canton and commune are both part of that interview.
I’ve heard that in the city of Zurich the interviews are often omitted under the new procedure.

What exam did you take at the canton? The language one? What’s the difference between the exam at the Gemeinde and interview at the Gemeinde. In my canton, I just had to take the test at the Gemeinde. All other communication is by snail mail. The second time I will be in person is at the ceremony.
@anon72362200 - could you please be so kind to share some information about your process, interveiw, timelines. Many of us are early in process and anxiously looking down this long chain of events.
I had to visit Gemeinde in ZH just once for a single interview. And I know a person who failed to naturalize in Zug but had no problems in Zurich. It was a good educated European family with two young kids.
Good news that might reduce the time for the ordinary naturalization process.
From 1st of August 2026 this project will start in 5 cantons.

What’s important is whether this will reduce the naturalization timeline and I would say the answer is no.

I honestly don’t know, let’s wait and see.
Because the extended timeline is a feature, not a bug. It is used as part of the filter process in many towns/cantons. The “2000 different ways to become Swiss” will continue for a long time to come.

How did your in-person integration interview for naturalization go? I live in Adliswil with my family, and we recently submitted our application for Swiss citizenship.
I’m specifically curious about:
- Was the interview with a single person or a panel? What were their roles/titles (no names needed, just curious who conducts it)?
- What questions did they ask?
- How long did the interview last?
- What was the general atmosphere like – highly formal, or more relaxed/informal?
- Is there anything else you remember or wish you had known beforehand?
