Not New Phone Coming out: The Swisscom Overpriced HTC HD2

The N900 had poor reviews ( http://www.lesnumeriques.com/article-407-7194-34.html ), in french but read the number of stars

Hi Guys,

I got my HD2 Saturday and so far I really like it. It has been reviewed to death so I won't bother going that route except to say that the web browsing and application performance is more like a computer than a phone. So much so I am going to leave my laptop at home during my holiday and see how it goes.

For Windows Mobile newbies like me, let me suggest the following three applications as "must haves".

CorePlayer - It's $30, but it turns your phone into a 4.3" PMP. Windows Media Player is pretty poor at format compatibilty and performance. CorePlayer plays almost everything. On the HD2 you need to turn off "DirectDraw" video rendering and use "GDI" or "Raw Framebuffer" instead. If you use DirectDraw the video is scrambled and after 5 seconds it Coreplayer crashes your phone. It is so nice to be able to download something right off the internet (something free and legal, of course), transfer it to your phone and watch it without having to spend hours converting it to a mobile-friendly format.

BeyondPod - I think the built-in RSS reader is probably better for feeds, but this is a good Podcast catcher. I hate syncing with my computer just to pick up new podcasts.

Skype - Voice calling over Wi-Fi. I have a Skype unlimited account which means I can call virtually any landline or mobile number worldwide for free. Great for traveling!

I do have some questions that I need some help with:

Storage Space - I was getting warnings that my storage space was almost full so I browsed around and could not find any files anywhere that were taking up so much space. Finally I googled the problem and tried what was suggested: opening up IE and clearing the cache. Here's the deal: I never used IE on this phone. How could it have over 60MB in it's cache? After I did this, CorePlayer became unregistered and I had to type in my registration code again. What gives? Did IE just delete all temp files? How can I keep this from happening again?

Windows Mobile Marketplace - I cannot use this to buy apps. Free apps work ok, but no paid apps. As I have an English HD2, the marketplace determines I am in the UK. If try and use a credit card it complains that my billing country (Switzerland) is different than the store country (UK). I think the marketplace uses your phone's number and currency region to determine where you are because I switched to US-English and I got the US Marketplace. The problem: the Swiss Windows Mobile App Store is COMPLETELY EMPTY . There are some free apps and demos, but you cannot purchase ANYTHING. So there is no way to add credit card information in the Swiss store and then switch to another store with apps. Any ideas?

Skyfire - What's the big deal about it his app? It's a browser that does flash...right? How does it stack up against pre-installed Opera?

You must return it immediately! there's a problem with the battery it can explode!

Do return it at: corsebouthereturn, lausanne 1004.

You'll have a wonderful replacement instead!

Here's an application I was recommanded by a real honkong guy:

http://www.mymobiler.com/

Its for HTC HD (will probably works on the hd2) and allow you to control the mobile from your PC screen!

Where did you hear/read about that? Can you post a link here?

Congrats on your purchase.

Yes the videoplayer on the HD was unresponsive, kept buffering even videos you'd recorded using the phone itself.

Don't know. But there is a function in the Search application where you can search for file over 100kb or something. Not that useful as most photos, vids and music files are bigger than this but the 100K is fixed. Plus when you find the files you can't do much with them and have to remember which path the file is saved in. Opera browser is better than IE on the HD but for some sites Opera is not compatible. Windows Mobile Marketplace - I cannot use this to buy apps. Free apps work ok, but no paid apps. As I have an English HD2, the marketplace determines I am in the UK. We could do a meetup to help you sorting out your problems with the HTC HD2 definitely...

How about tonight at 1 am on the parking lot?

Ps: come alone and with the device

(avoid the parking places for "frau", thanks)

Thanks. Orange has some pretty good deals on phones right now. Sunrise as well. But it looks like Swisscom is barely giving any subsidy

Exactly!

And they know they are "in power" (at least with my company which has some contract with them only), so they use this to overcharge!!!

RAaah

I've seen it for real!!!

In Fnac, without contract... It's overpriced as usual Fnac stuff, of 150chf!

859chf... ridiculous! Looks like Fnac and Swisscom pratice together, haha!

Anyway it's quite...BIIIG screen! Not to heavy, not too light... Handling it was good!

Unfortunately it was not charged so I could not play with it.

If anyone feels generous in those christmassy times, and is willing to offer it to me

That's how much it costs in the UK too, so the price isn't excessive compared to other places.

N900 had poor reviews :P

I saw this morning some advertisement in the street for the HTC HD2!!!

It says available in sunrise, mediamarkt, interdiscount, and 2-3 more shops I forgot!

Nothing on interdiscount website, neither on sunrise's...

But it's good hopefully it will have more decent prices

Well, with contract I have seen it really cheap, even free with contract like 40quids a month!

So Its not with vodaphone who stupidly removed it for sales because they will have the ITURD!!!

But look Tmobile:

HTC HD 2 FREE

from £35/month (24 months)

Seize any moment with the HTC HD2 Windows® phone, featuring a massive HD touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, choice of hundreds of great apps and the other features you’d expect.

Key features Massive 4.3" HD touchscreen Hundreds of apps in the Windows Marketplace Free My Phone backup & sync service 5 megapixel camera it's VERY far from the offer in Switzerland with Swisscom...Especially if I get it with a pricey professional contract

Even better:

36pounds/months over 18 months and FREE HTC HD2!!!

ok you techies......

I have to get a new phone. Am tied to Swisscom (company contract) but I can get what I want within reason.

What ́s the best phone to get? Remember I want a phone not a camera or surf the superhighway (screens too small for my tired old eyes).

So what to get??

How about..the HTC HD2?

if you get it, I can give you some free tuitions, tonight on the parking behind migros at 2am!

come alone with the device, as usual!

you need to change the regional settings to Switzerland, uninstall the Marketplace app and re-install it.

However, there are no paid apps in the Swiss store yet, so it's pointless anyway.

We received three eval units on Monday (we're outfitting some of our senior staff with new phones) and I have to say I'm not very impressed with the HD2 so far. the screen's great, lots of eye-candy, but apart from that: not much going on. The marketplace is a joke compared to Android market, the keyboard is so-so, and it runs out of memory very quickly. I've only installed about 5 apps and the internal memory is full.

The mediaplayer is a disgrace, you're pretty much forced to shed the 30$ for pocketplayer. Anyway, I'll have some time to play with the device until after Christmas but since my colleagues didn't like it very much either, we'll probably stick with the Blackberry for another year.

I'm not going to say the M-Word here. (yes, I brought this upon myself)

Yes! it's a very poor device!

If I was you, I would give to the first one asking for it...

Do you want to give it to me?

(come on it's Christmas, everyone's generous!!)

If it were mine, I'd sell it to you for a decent price.
