On a related note: I know one can take also such items to recycling trams. Does anyone know what happens to them, i.e. are they recycled?
I have some old pieces of cloth I'd like to dispose of. I know H&M and C&A accept old clothes (I.e. one can take a bag of old clothes and the store accepts - no questions asked). I was wondering if we can make up a list of other stores that also accept old clothes/fabrics.

Much of the clothing donated is not suitable for use, or distribution is too expensive, so the fabric is pulped to make into rags.

Be aware that the high cost of labor, warehouse space, and transportation sets significant barriers the second-hand clothing industry in Switzerland. And, need in Switzerland simply is not that great, so the charities collecting have to find a balance.
Additionally there are concerns about the environmental impact of the 'used clothing mountain', as well as what shipping second hand clothing to other countries does to local economies.
Which is not to say don't donate, not at all - rather aware of how your donation might be used and take that into consideration when deciding where to donate.

Generally, make sure any clothing you donate is in perfect condition and freshly washed or dry cleaned. Package it in such a way to minimize wrinkles.

My solution is that whenever I travel home, I pack a suitcase of good quality clothes for donation to a charity there that I know well, where need is greater.
You could look around your local area for any Brockenhaus / Brockie ... some of them would take clothes in good condition. We have a great relationship with our two local brockies, we give them occasional donations and they tolerate us taking hours to choose what we plan to buy (sometimes over several weeks). Also, they're good for chats while you're deciding, if custom's a little slow. Good training in Swiss German for you!
This is exactly what I want. The items are not suitable for donation but I'd like them be recycled at least.
My local C&A in France will accept old clothes, and will give you 10% off a purchase. But not bags of clothes.
Any clothes that are still in very good condition but that we no longer wear are laundered and donated to the Rad Cross shop in Kleinbasel.
For things that are no longer wearable because of damage or stains, we are lucky enough to have a Texaid bank about 10 minutes walk away. Sometimes if it's something made of a plain coloured fabric I cut a swatch off as it can be useful for repairs.
Any old stained teatowels I give to my OH for jobs like cleaning his bike.
