Orthodontic Nightcap

Dear Englishforum parents,

Have any of your kids had experience with an orthodontic nightcap?

Did the child get used to it? Did it affect the quality of sleep? How long was it necessary to wear it at night?

The orthodontist showed us the night brace that has to be placed on the head and the device looked brutal to me. Apparently, this device is needed to move the molar teeth back.

What are the alternatives, if the child refuses / cannot wear it?

My son had a similar problem and the dentist in South Africa made for him a sort of plastic brace (sorry, don't know the technical term) which he had to wear over his teeth at night for about a year. It did the trick perfectly.

I think in Switzerland they tend to over engineer (charge more? ) a solution!

I wore one as a teenager. It's quite uncomfortable, but for moving back molars I'm not sure there are any alternatives. I was 15-16 years old at the time, so was mature enough to wear if even if I didn't like it.

My teen had the Herbst Appliance and managed to move the jaw a good 7 mm. It’s permanently fixed so there’s no issue with forgetting to put it in (which is how we arrived at that point in the first place… )

Uncomfortable for the first couple of days then each time it’s tightened up it gives a couple of days of mild discomfort.

Maybe look into "myobrace".

One of my children use it. Took a while to get use to it. Was more for their front teeth but I am sure it can be used for molars. You might need to investigate more.
