Parents: Is social media killing our kids / truth / democracy?

Of course it is! A floppy disk which isn’t in use since the Cold War!

I used floppies all the way to early 2000s - was the Cold War still going then?

That’s cruelty, Phil. :joy: When we grew up we had 10 minutes cartoons in the evening and I still feel that frustration. (lol, no, but you get the point)

I’m the lax one, my wife wanted to have zero TV time. I wanted to allow PP to help them learn a bit of English.

I was tempted to allow them cartoons on Saturday morning just so that I could have a lie in. Plus I loved Saturday morning TV myself as a kid.

Indeed, five minutes of Peppa Pig is five minutes too many.:joy:

I think TV is really harmless. Youtube has a lot of dumb shit, but TikTok and Twitter are the worst in terms of speed and intensity of propaganda, fakes and hate.

I quoted Phil. You may be into falsifying your quotes, I’m not.

Agree that TV is largely harmless due to the decades of regulation and taming, which i absolutely don’t mind. However, i also try to “push” them for more “active” media consumption where they can curate it based on Interest and start educating them how to be vigilant and responsible. I think its better that they and we, as parents make a few correctible mistakes while the stakes are lower rather than later when the stakes are higher.

Did you actually have a point to all this, if I may borrow your phrase, “blabla”? How do you manage social media and phones with your kids?

“Falsifying quotes”. THE DRAMA!

This is how your post shows up for me. The whole of Phil’s post plus half of a sentence by Shirley so I can totally understand the confusion.

My kids loved it but then they watched other stuff too. If you’re an adult and there’s too much “Peppa” it can get on your nerves… :joy:
But Peppa was (is) brilliant imho…for certain ages.

Here we go again. I already said these sort of threads are to be avoided. I think I will move to the new EV thread as I am curious. Still can’t be bothered to replace my car. I’ll be among the last people to buy an electric car… :joy:

All I can say is that we are day 7 of absolutely no electronic except supervised used of PC for school and very limited Netflix and our life has changed for the better. My son is now so much calmer and pleasent to talk to, studied really hard in the past days and even reads books :joy::joy::joy:

Reminds me of the joke “we had our internet cut and i was forced to talk to my family. They aren’t such bad people after all…”

Do teenagers use Twitter?

Definitely not Twitter

Excellent!

How did you manage to convince your son to go through with this? Bribes? Threats? Rewards?

I suspect the answer is “yes”

What is Twitter? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You obviously don’t. I have made mine.

Tell me, how much does Phil quote in the quoted post? If there’s a problem with that half sentence, who do you talk to?

No, but I do. And TikTok seems to be equally manipulative. And that’s what most kids nowadays use.

I am not a big fan of regulation, but these companies are out of control and their negative influence on our societies cannot be overstated.
