Parents that give kids 'special' names...

Kids can be given entirely normal(ish) names and be bullied. It's just the nature of the beast.

I imagine being called Timmy, Walter or Joey in 1970's/80's Britain wasn't a lot of fun.

This is exactly the case of I was thinking of when we talk about "where do we draw the line" and much of that is intentions.

I find it a bit strange that after all the you went through you still think it's OK to judge people on their names.

But just so you know plenty of people are teased and bullied for no reason what so ever. Many not foreign & normal named children get bullied. The problem is with the bullies, not the victim.

She's not judging people for their names as far as I understood - rather the parents who come up with dumb names... and I'm sorry, but in what culture is Moon Unit or Diva Muffin (from Frank Zappa) or Fifi Trixiebelle, Peaches Honeyblossom and Pixie (Bob Geldof), "normal", to name but two cases of cruel parents?

I couldn't imagine being called Timmy in North America now. Southpark kinda ruined that name

dammit! I do not understand the reference! A TV show??

You know, I actually though that this thread would be about names like you just wrote out. It is not. Her complaint is about names like Tiffany & Amber & Hanee & double barreled pompous names because she doesn't think they sound right in Zuri-D.

And she IS judging the kids and has said quite a few times that these kids will not succeed in life because of their names. They will never be bankers & lawyers she wrote.

And I say, let them NOT be bankers & lawyers!!! Let them be rock stars & artist & photographers & fashion designers & doll makers & game developers & CSIs (of course we need those).... I'm sure they can find a life too.

You mean I should have read the entire thread?

Anyhoo, Mods why is this in off-topic rather than complaints or daily life (in ZH), which is, after all the center of the universe...?

I can't see a name precluding one from success in any field. I don't think the OP is a successful banker or lawyer.

We had an article to read at school about Jamie Oliver's kids....

Poppy Honey Rosie Oliver (born 18 March 2002), Daisy Boo Pamela Oliver (born 10 April 2003), Petal Blossom Rainbow Oliver (born 3 April 2009) and Buddy Bear Maurice Oliver (born 15 September 2010)..(wiki)

I always loved Maurice. I am having a serious problem with that name now . OTT names are just a way for parents to get attention, me thinks. Although, yelling, Poppy Honey, Daisy Boo, Petal Blossom, Buddy Bear..., sounds like a riot.

Me neither - I would love to be enlightened, as that's only a few letter changes away from my entire name - first, second and surname.

And I was at school in 60's/70's Britain and had no problems over names.

I'm pretty sure that I made clear that my beef is with the parents and I don't think it's ok, but I do think it's a fact of life and to be honest, I'm not going to saddle my kid with trying to change how people think with regard to something like this.

I said that? Where? Because I don't particularly equate either profession with success.

No, dear, indeed I am not, I leave that sort of work up to the person whisking me off to dinner.

Please make sure his name is Heido Eidegeschosser. He will be worthless otherwise.

Hmm, if he's not listed in the Bilanz 300, I'm not interested.

I jest, there's just certain names that I would exclude because, well, there has already been one of those and if it didn't end nicely, I'm not going for another one. My loss and all that. Anyone called Daniel, Lukas or Oliver, however, is more than welcome to apply, there seems to be an unusually high "all round nice guy" ratio for those names.

No. You didn't say it, in fact, it was Sky who put banker out there. But you certainly are implying that children "saddled" with "special" names like Amber are pretty much doomed to suffer prejudice. But, I guess to you this prejudice has no consequences.

Like was said above, kids will get bullied for many reasons. I'll bet we can find kids with "special" names NOT being bullied and kids with "normal" names being bullied, & vice versa, ad nausea, etc.

Oh really? YOU aren't judging them. You just feel sorry for them because OTHERS are judging them. My bad.

Anyway, I'm outie taking me & my pompous double barreled name to work! lol.

Given names are a sign of popular and/or contemporary culture, with the occasional blend of tradition, plus a desire to be different, in some cases.

It is nothing new.

How many 60yr old Elvis's are running around cursing their parents, or 20-something yr old Kylie's.

I was at school with half the cast of the New Testament for the boys and a cottage garden of flowers for the girls, except for "Catherine-Ann", who always had to be called Catherine-Ann.

I think my father's generation was the cast of the Beano - or maybe it was just that everyone had nicknames, back then.

Now with the celebrity culture - many of whom have invented their stage names, anyway - there is a sad desire for parents to try to emulate their "heroes and heroines", by giving their names to their kids - often with a twist.

This is just the current trend. Biblical and flower names are no longer in-vogue - it's Hello magazine and Big Brother - all in the desire to try to be different and individual - along with everyone else.

Having a 4yr old who enjoys her dose of CBeebies and Milkshake (Ch.5) in the mornings - you only have to watch the Happy Birthday (u.5's) section - there's a kid named after every children's TV character - "Happy Birthday to Milo who is 3 today from brother Jake" - for God's sake.

Yeah, I know this. Are you also being asked for a giant bday card as well? They are humongous. And bdays seem to happen many times a year in the mind of 4yr old.

I think while this thread is a complaint about brainfarts of some folks who go out of their way to make their kid "interesting" through a formality, I can't shake the feeling that it's actually discriminatory in its self. Society is us. If we are openminded, society has more chance to be openminded too.

It's beginning to look as though someone has a dodgy name themself and they're upset because you might be judging them for it

Never thought double names were fancy... Knew way too many people in the south (us) who were doubled -Tammy Jo, Mary sue, Betty Jane and Joe bob- I kid you not. Preppy kids often have snack food nicknames... Chip, muffin,

But I do think if you name your kid something wonky The kid will face

1. Higher than average chance of teasing, especially if your kid is not otherwise fabulous... Even then

2. High chance of name change. Grace Slick(of Jefferson airplane named her kid god, and later god became China or some spelling).

A child named God? I hope this guy will never come near to French speaking people ever... how awkward.

The kid has long since become china or whatever, so not a problem.
