Pensioner illegally cutting down trees

What! Why?

“Zurich city police have arrested a pensioner for illegally cutting down around 100 trees in a forest in the southwest of the city near Uetliberg.
Caught in the act, the 78-year-old man says he wanted to provide more light and warmth to the giant conifers.”

Small trees and over 10 years

The article mentions sequoias. Surely there aren't any in Uetliberg? - They generally require a cool, damp maritime climate to thrive - like on the US west coast.

They decided to create an avenue of mammoth trees after the storm "Lothar" (26 December 1999) which destroyed so many trees around Uetliberg, they chose sequoias which are supposed to be storm-proof.

Clearly no match for a determined pensioner, though.

'Old man strength' is real.

Never underestimate what a lone person can achieve when he doesn't give a f-

Just how high is that bar, my friend?

This piqued my interest.

I found a video of the Sequoia avenue in the snow. The walk along the avenue starts at 2.00.

The text for the video has lots of information too.

Sounds good though for the newspaper sales !

Wait a min, sequoias grow relatively fast when compared to other trees. They're tiny now only because tree grow their roots before going up

Point is, sequoias will grow fast regardless of the trees around. The guy got in trouble for nothing.
