I have applied for a the new permit (plastic card, before that i had the paper permit).
Question - is my status illegal in the country till i get my permit ?
I am an indian national.
I was told by the officer that i would need to get another visa to enter the country if i left before i got my permit back. They would send the permit to the lawyer of the company who are getting the permit for me.
No, your stay is legal, it doesn't matter how long it takes.
Yes, you need re-entry visa (roughly around 93 CHF), from your canton stadthaus, if you leave country as you dont have any proof in hand. Renewal takes around 4 to 6 weeks.
Suggestion: Don't plan to leave country if its not that urgent.
As mentioned already - Your stay is legal You need to get re-entry visa if you plan to visit outside Switzerland The time taken is somewhere between 2-8 weeks Further advice: The kriesburo can provide you with a temporary identity card (~ 20 CHF), which details your name, address and mentions that your permit is under renewal. In either case, case your passport with you. Sometime police or other authorities can ask you for Identity proof. In such case a passport will help you get away quickly. Last time I got my permit renewed - I didn't use to carry my passport. I was stopped by police at HB for random checks. I had to call my employer to prove the police that I'm legally living in Switzerland.
I've been waiting for my B-Permit (went to do the renewal paper works 3 weeks ago) and need to travel to Frankfurt by land on this Saturday. Is it ok to bring just the passport?
I am under the similar situation and after inquiring at Migration office they advised me that as per the regulation/law "if you are living and working here then you must have a valid permit to be allowed multiple entries in Switzerland"
Even though on my australian passport I do not need a visa to VISIT switzerland however as I am now living and working in Switzerland my entry in to Switzerland is not for short term TOURISM purpose. They asked me to get the re-entry visa (they gave me for one month - multiple entry) on my passport.
So, if you live and work here in Switzerland then you must have a valid permit to enter Switzerland.
Migration office in Zurich gave me the re-entry visa for free after accessing my situation. Also, I have been told to remember the "application number" just in case if I get asked questions about my permit, etc. Apparently, authorities can check your application number to establish your current situation (i.e - what type of permit you have, what is the status of your renewal, etc).
