i'm 100% sure he is still a PhD student, i actually pressure him to finish soon because he's already there for 3.5 years & i'm tired of this long working hours without overtime pay! he has some projects though that are privately funded, if that makes the difference of getting the "exceptional" pay... that's the big "?"
Again, I stress this. If your husband goes into industry or academia or any scientific job he is gonna get paid on a salary. He will not get over time pay.
financial institutions pay well.. there's no way a gross income of CHF 4'500 is well paid.. c'mon experienced office workers / assistants get that much after some time & get paid for overtime..
Again, your husband is still continuing his education, he is a student. You should be happy he gets paid what he does because there are many many PhDs who do not get that salary. For a grad student HE IS WELL PAID. Did you not read what other PhD's are making?
And it's a PhD in the sciences of course he works long hours. You sure better hope he doesn't become a post-doc and then go into academia cause it'll be longs hours with no over time pay indefinitely.
I have a question concerning a post-doc salary in Zürich (ETH) at the institute of chemistry. I obtained my Ph.D. in Germany, working there 4 years. I heared that the salary should be 60.000CH per year. I am (27) not married (I think it's also important). I am not EU-sitizen.
How much is the difference between Brutto and Netto?
Interesting!! I have to start a Post Doc position at EPFL in Lausanne, but I cannot find any information about salary!! I need a contract-type for PostDoc position, and/or a website where I can found information about postDoc contracts. I have no idea about salary, taxes, rights and duties, and so on... Can you help me??

Dear Filo, you can find some general information about salaries, taxes and research related stuff in Switzerland on www.myscience.ch . There are maybe other websites?
Hye guys, am new 2 this, but I am going to start my PhD next month in Bern. Can anyone tell me about the salary, am going to join in inselpital and its funded by snf. What will be the gross and the net salary(take home).
This has already been discussed in the beginning of the thread, but just to give you some idea, my husband is also doing his PhD at Inselspital and began with CHF2,750 (gross) per month, and that's again same as what was discussed earlier in the thread, but that salary increases year to year depending on the funding received. Hubby also receives the 13 months pay. It's just enough to scrape by month to month, after rent, household expenses, various other bills and the killer health insurance payments.
Well... each person has a different experience... that's just my 2 cents (or rappen)
When I was doing my PhD at the ETH I was making just short of 6000 (before deductions), plus getting a 13th month. And this was about 5 years ago so that job probably pays even more now. Furthermore, I had a proper students card so I was getting meals etc at student prices. This was in electrical engineering however. where PhD students are very hard to come by and they basically kiss your feet for being there. I gather in other departments things are different though. In the first industry job I got after that I was only making marginally more despite working much harder and longer hours, plus I had higher costs so you can imagine I often longed to be able to go back. This is why in the engineering departments PhD students often stay for six or seven years. It works out well for the students and it's good for the professors too as fluctuation only means they lose time explaining the same basics over and over again.
I also have PhD in Electrical Engineering and posses +8-year industrial experience as well. I work for industry, specifically ABB and I find their salaryies not so much higher than PhD bursaries. Only advantage is perhaps opportunity for promotion and project managment prospectives. The job in industry itself is usually not as inspiring and motivating as PhD thesis topics. It is more task and client orientated.
When I was doing my PhD in SA there were always struggles for bursary and student funds, which made many people quit and find industrial jobs. I persevered doing the both and part-time, that's why it took me longer than it normally would for EU student with funds.
Do you know if it is relatively popular to take up post-doc positions at ETH? Is German language knowledge compulsory for such position?
I've just started my PhD in Electrical Engineering at ETH. Let's say that my salary is a bit less than 6000CHF before deductions and I don't get a 13th month, but still I can say that I am lucky since my professor can pay me a 100% salary. Bad to hear that for other faculties it's not always like that, though.
