Police block traveller convoy on motorway

Was just going to post about that. Was just wondering why it’s French gypsies here in Switzerland that we see. Isn’t there enough of France for them to wander around in? Not sure if we’ve ever seen any other gypsy nationalities here in Switzerland.

Given that the motorway was closed for over 8 hours I’m pretty sure there were a lot of other motorists cursing the gypsies.

Switzerland seems to be getting more strict about where they can go. Valais has that one official site and there’s now a permanent one near Bern on the A1 too that they made after several years of a temporary place for them there.

Did see a couple of dozen gypsy caravans down in Matran the other day by the now closed Schilliger garden centre. They were just moving off so whether they’d stayed there overnight or what I don’t know.

the travellers refused the orders of the Vaud and Valais cantonal police to exit the motorway

They should take a leaf out of Trump’s book and sent them to El Salvador! :stuck_out_tongue:

There’s a bunch parked at the pool in Nyon. Mostly CH plates, from a glance. I didn’t check them all.

If they are living in CH, wouldn’t they need to have CH plates after some time?

Lots of gypsies here from Romania and other countries. On top of that Switzerland has its own clan of gypsies.

There are even a few films about the Jenish

The police in Valais are fascist.

Basically they are preventing the garbage they always leave behind.

I assume the French ones move out in the autumn since far as I know the sites for them here aren’t open during the winter. I know the one near Bern is only open from March onwards.

It’s ironic that these travellers spent years breaking locks and illegally installing themselves on the site in the Vue des Alpes but now that it’s officially been turned into a site for them they no longer want to stay there.
It is apparently currently the only authorised site for travellers with space in Switzerland, all the others are full.

We’ve seen them all over the place in France during the summer when we’ve been on holiday there so they clearly stay there too, I have no idea why some of them choose to come here every year.

Not defending them but they have spent many generations travelling about Europe, long before borders were established.

Swiss pockets offer more for the picking

There is no evidence in the available data or recent crime statistics that specifically links the Yenish people in Switzerland to higher rates of petty crime. Swiss crime reports and expert analyses generally attribute increases in petty theft and related offenses to factors such as crime tourism and, more recently, to certain groups of asylum seekers, particularly from outside Europe. The Yenish, a recognized national minority in Switzerland, are not singled out in official crime discussions or statistics regarding petty crime.

And therefore:

I was not referring to the Yenish.

Well I definitely like Stephan Eicher.

The caravans on the photo at SWI look infinitely newer and cleaner than the ones of the usual travellers…

Ooh thanks for the reminder of that film. That was a belter - will have to watch it again over Easter.

Also check out Ritchie’s first, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
