Private sick insurance for a contractor

Hi,

searched the forum but could not find any related threads.

as far as I know, employees on contract roles i.e with a fixed term are not covered for sickness i.e there is no pay (at the daily rate) on the days when the employee is sick and this is clearly a difference to permanent roles.

I would like to know if there is a private insurance that contractors can pay a premium every month and get the coverage that is similar to or at least close to the cover of a permanent employee.i understand that the terms could be more stricter for covering the sickness of a contract employee (e.g doctors note from day 1 etc).

I know that accident insurance can be taken from your health insurance company irrespective of type of employment and this is not an issue and my question is specifically about daily sickness.

Hi!

Yes there is, in German it is called "Taggeld Versicherung". An example here: https://www.visana.ch/de/privatkunde...herung/taggeld

Just an addition - contractors and fixed terms roles are typically different things. A contractors is payed via a third company payroll and your contract is with this company. It may or not include sick pay and you have to check that contract. Holding a fixed term contract (also sometimes called temporary contract) with a company may or may not exclude you from these benefits and you need to check with the company you work for.

Of course you could also be a contractor on a fixed term role (hence third party payroll company contract applies)

Thanks for the link which is the information that I was looking for.

when I checked the link provided by you, there is a reference to illness being covered after a certain waiting period and of course there is no indication of the likely premiums for the daily allowance insurance in accordance with the waiting period.... i.e the applicable premium for a waiting period of 0, for a waiting period of 2 weeks etc...

does anyone have information on the likely premiums for this insurance?

Thanks in advance.

Too many factors to consider like for how long, with which waiting period, which amount you want covered etc. Your own health insurance may offer the same and perhaps you can request an offer etc

While such an insurance does exist it is very unlikely that you as an individual will actually be accepted. And if you were, it will prove to be very expensive say around a 1000 Francs per month with a 60 day waiting period.

The problem is that the risk is very high for a company writing such a policy for an individual. There used to be a few IT contractors associations around a while back that used to do such a policy for members and the rate was around 1,500 Francs for year with a 30 day waiting period. But most of them closed down several years ago as far as I know.

Theses days I think the only way to get such insurance at a reasonable rate is via a payroll company or agency.

Search for "Krankentaggeld AND Selbständigerwerbende" and then get a few quotes.

There are several insurance companies that underwrite such policies.

If you're on paper actually an employee working for a payroll company then talk to them about it as often you can adjust the benefits as you're paying for them.
