You don’t pay any interests no, you just pay the difference between what was the assessment and what was the new number calculated if it became bigger, if new number became smaller then they return you your money with interest.

In Zurich you pay interests (Verzugzins) for underpaying the cantonal/local tax from the 1 January next year. It doesn’t matter what was in your provisional bill. You have to pay the real amount before Dec 31 current year.

Yes system is very different, that’s why i heard many try to pay more than what they think are taxes, to get some interest from those money. But in schwyz there is no liberty like this to pay more/less, you have to pay exact before deadlines (either with discount or without discount), you are not penalized with any interests if final taxes come higher, but if they come lower, then you get your money back with some interest.

The interest is set out by the kanton and gemeinde and varies. some have no bearing on the SNB rate e.g. in my Gemeinde, they charged around 5-6% even when rates were zero.

Just an update, as I’ve received my first provisional tax assessment in ZG, whilst it might be true that they don’t want to let you pay any arbitrary amount (blank QR), adjusting the payslip is very easy. On the top of the letter there’s a QR for “Bassisfaktoren anpassen”.

they sent me 2 different QR codes; in case I want to pay before an end of July deadline, with a discount, or if I want to pay after - full amount. That’s service… :slight_smile:

Yeah, let me to recap!

The provisional cantonal tax:

  • payable based on an empty QR invoice any time in the beginning of the year (i.e. one can do -1k, -1k etc.)
  • later payable until 31.07 with a discount based on one QR invoice or until the end of the year without a discount (the previous payments are accounted for)

The provisional federal tax:

  • normally is normally issued in Feb next year expected to be paid by 31.03
  • can be payable based on an empty on-demand QR invoice any time earlier than that
