Aye, but chear yourself up with the knowledge that on average we get more bank holidays than the UK.
Anecdotally, I got a real insight into the Swiss view of bank holidays when my Swiss colleagues do a literal translation of "Enjoy your second Sunday" before a bank holiday.
1) I get the impression that Sunday is to be enjoyed over Saturdays
2) Bank holidays in the UK are all about catching up on your DIY... clearly (as we oh-so-know) not the case here
OT, but I'd really prefer life if we had Sundays followed by Saturdays, i.e. day of rest first followed by day off. So a day to relax and charge up the batteries then a full-on day-off, so to speak.
I think it's great when public holidays fall on weekends. I'm only paid for the days I work. Every public holiday during the week reduces my billable days potential for the year.
I like leap years as well. I get paid extra, while permanent employees have to work one day more for no return.
Does anyone have a comprehensive list of what cantons will and won't be observing the May 1st holiday? There seems to be a lot of confusion and contradiction depending on which sites you visit e.g. one says the whole of Basel will be closed but Wiki says its only a holiday in Basel Land.
Not sure if it's true but our school sent out a helpful note saying that France and Germany are also on a public holiday and will be closed too. Stock up today, fill your trollies (carts for our transatlantic friends)!
many of us could manage for a week with the contents of freezers and cupboards. Any ideas for good meals out of what's lying around...
I know that we were thinking about going to the outlet centre in Metzingen (DE) on Saturday, but it is closed. They are opening on Sunday as compensation though.
Yes, stores in Germany and France will be closed. It appears you will have a better chance of getting your shopping done here since certain Cantons don't seem to observe the holiday.... pah! call it a holiday, its a blooming Saturday FFS
I'm new to the forum, so I'll introduce myself first! I've lived in Switzerland for three years now, my hubby has been here for ten. I'm trying to learn German, love running, and am generally enjoying not working for the first time in almost thirty years!
I have checked the Manor and Coop websites and both are open in Baden tomorrow, 1st May, from 08.00 to 18.00.
I love my paid annual leave, and my paid sick days, and my paid public holidays, and my paid public holiday bridging days. In fact, there's so much paid time off, I don't think I'll miss the occasional "wasted" weekend public holiday.
