So just read most of the posts regarding this, and do still have a general question regarding this.
The "myth" which most of my colleagues or acquaintances told me:
- If you earn under 120 k / year or even if you earn more, but you did not receive payment over this value (got hired later on in the year) and being your first year here (and being on a B permit, where taxes are withheld at your job)--> you will NOT need to do this.
Funny part is that I am under the 120 k threshold for 2022 / and did come here in late January (so one months pay was not considered) I got a nice big envelope last night in the mail.
Question would be : should I have received this form to complete or not ?
I have other colleagues that have been here for more than 3 years (married/single) and when I asked them about this , they did not receive anything like this, ever
Well, after having the myth canceled I noticed that you can also do this online, using the AHV nr as username and you have a password on that form.
Logged in, looks pretty straightforward. Completed partially, will probably do a double check with a tax consultant, being the first time.
There is some documentation on this subject issued by the Canton of Zurich’s tax office here .
As per the document, a typical expat who earns less that 120k/year will not need to file a tax return. However, also as per the document, there are caveats and exceptions - the most common being to hold a C permit, or to be married to a C permit holder or Swiss Citizen.
If this document does not explain why they are asking you for a tax return, then I would strongly encourage you to simply contact the Cantonal tax office and ask. Unlike in some countries, my experience is that they are helpful, accessable, and very willing to work with people trying to follow the rules.
If you were a Swiss tax resident only for ~11 months in 2022, the salary of these 11 months is annualized, i.e., multiplied with 12/11. This brings you over the 120k threshold.
Thank you for the link, and yes, it does not answer my question and am not in any of those situations. Will give them an email/phone on Monday to check why I received this
Actually I earn a bit lower than 120 k , so even if they multiply with 12 .. would still end under 120 k.
But, if they do the rounding up (multiply by 12, instead of 11)and add some extra bonuses (relocation package + bonuses) --> than yeah it would be a bit over 120 k --> weird version to force you to do the tax, but hey...
Depending on which type of relocAtion bonus you are talking about, this will indeed be added to income and taxed. Typically things like temporary housing, relocation allowance etc are taxed.
I knew that the relocation package is added, so to confirm --> if I had moved here in September --> I would have still received the form to fill ? , because of the extrapolation of the gross per year ?
