Quote for installing a washing-machine

Hello,

I would like to install a washing-machine into my bathroom(landlord is fine with it). There is currently no connection/pipe available in the bathroom which makes it hard to anticipate the cost without having coming and checking the current setup.

I called some company to have a quote and to see if I can afford the necessary work but they told me that they can't give me a quote and would just make someone come and do the work (which is weird to me, I can't accept by advance something which I don't know the cost about)

Would you know any plumber in Zurich that accept to do quotes ?

Don't know any plumber who does that. Basically depends on what is involved. Could be that the house is old with no water shutoff in each apartment. In which case all tenants must be notified. Have done the job myself which is about an hour so ask them how much they charge for an hour of work plus materials.

Don't do it before a quote or you can take your trousers off in anticipation.

The water should be able to taken from an existing feed with a connection, drainage should be able to be plumbed into the washbasin drainage.

It's not so complicated but it could be expensive.....especially with no estimate.

Ask for a quote on Renovero

Quotes are free and you will hopefully get a few.

But…if you want a realistic quote then you are going to have to do some ground work yourself - include as much information as possible - distance from washing machine to existing pipework, location of electric socket, etc and include photos.

This, this, a thousand times this!

Prices can be all over the ball park, especially for service/installation/renovation jobs. Over the years when gathering quotes for projects, I often find that one is an outlier by a factor of 3-10. Without a quote, you are just asking to be fleeced.

If a company won't give you a quote, move on to the next name on your list. Tom's suggeston of going through Renovero is a good one.

Also get a quote to take it back out when up leave or get written permission from the landlord to leave it in situ.

Oh yes! I've had quotes from 400 to 12,000 for the same job.

Like for like ?

Yes, I wrote about it in another thread which I cannot be bothered to find for you as you saw fit to groan my post.

Back in the US, I had a washing machine that was on wheels and could just be rolled over to and attached to my kitchen sink. It came with an adapter for that (to attach to the sink faucet). It was a decent-sized machine, about 60 cm wide x 60 cm deep x 100 cm tall (enough to wash a decent-sized load). Then the machine drained into the sink via a hose that came out of it. It actually worked very well.

I'm not sure if those are available here or if that would work for you, but I thought I'd mention it. Maybe there are even adapter kits that could work for smaller machines, to allow them to attach to a sink faucet and drain into the sink, etc.

We have one.

And the one before.

Though in both cases I ran the supply from the bidet supply, as I removed the bidet.

For my wife's daughter's, and my daughter's, I tapped into the toilet supply.

All drain to the sink.

Tom

Is that a flush and wash setup?

Oh dear, and NO I will not get into a discussion about Insurance and your rental contract. Been there, done that ...

You have permission from your Landlord, and that is good. But you have to check their conditions- many will insist it is done by a named and approved plumber, and via syphon and not with hot water supply- and will blame you if it is not done by specialist if anything goes wrong.

It can be an easy or a very hard setup.

Impossible to tell, unless you give them enough information with pics etc.. It's impossible for them to quote.

For your help:

1. Where can they take the water from (you just need cold input) - take a picture and measure the distance

2. Where is the sink drain located (likely where they will drain it to) - take a picture and measure the distance

3. Where can they shut the water when doing the work, is there a shut off valve near the incoming water, or do they need to shut the water to the flat, where is the shut off valve? Is it at the building level, or is it at your flat level. They can always freeze the pipe to do the work, but those are additional costs (a pipe freezer costs about 100+ for a day of rental if they don't have one)

Send pics and the above information and ask how much it will cost. They will have to do some minor work, and depending on the type of piping, depending on whether you have existing taps near the sink line - as you see - not straight forward. As it's a relatively small job I also understand why they can't be arsed to come and check things out.

We had ours put in the bathroom, he hooked it up to the sink somehow. Cost about 300- However the pipe ran along the floor by the bath and looked very temporary. When we had the bathroom redone, we had pipes put in properly for it. So it depends how professional/permanent a solution you want.

Only for fixed installations.

And why would anything go wrong?

Tom

If you ask for a a quote be aware that they might charge you for making the quote.

In my apartment the pre-existing washer connection was where the stubby cold inlet pipe to the sink had been replaced with a washing machine tap. To do this would take 30 mins tops. You don't need to be chasing through walls etc. At the moment the washer is fed off a thermostatic bath mixer tap.
