Re-importing a classic car

The car was supplied new to Switzerland in the early 1990s, staying here for 5 years or so, then was shipped round the world and finally taken to the UK.

Do I need to pay anything bringing it in? Can I walk into Strassenverkehrsamt with the VIN and pay 20chf for an FZ auswiese? Then just drive the car to the border on UK plates, stick on day plates, or even insure it first and get Swiss plates?

Any one done this before? I bought a Honda 125 once off a farmer without papers, and it had a Zuri sticker on it, STVA Zurich looked up the VIN and gave me an auswiese for 20chf.

I might even fit James Bond style rotating numberplates. Only joking there.
