recycling? How to deal with trash

I have a question whether anyone on the forum lives in Zollikerberg and can help me understand how recycling works here? I live close to the hospital and have accumulated loads of cardboard boxes and paper waiting to be recycled. I have not seen any special bins nearby. Are there any collection times and places where material for recycling should be lelf? Help please!

This Thread should help you. I'm pretty certain the links which will help you are in there.

Good luck.

Thanks! It's been a bit helpful, although we don't have special bags, but stickers. Still don't know where to put the paper and cardboard but will write to my landlord to ask.

The links should have been in the Thread I gave you. Unfortunately they no longer work.

I'll have a go at putting in new ones. This is Zürich. You need the Post Code to get the right dates. This is Zollikon

I have a mattress I want to dispose of... how do you do it here? Do you have to pay someone to take it away, or take it to a tip yourself?

Tried a forum search but no joy.

Either put it on the street that 1 day of the month.

or I know here in Montreux we have an unmaned dropoff place next to the other containers....

burn it in the front/backyard

Oh, I can actually leave it on the street on the 1st of every month?

Same for any old furniture and stuff then? Now i think about it I did see a sofa on the street last month but thought someone was being dodgy with the disposal.

yes here it is every 1st wednesday of the month

and people throw out everything on the street....sofas , kitchen stuff , everything.....some still usable

Sell it. Bout 100chfs seems fair.

Can any Zurich people confirm if its the same here please?

Yeah, I could do the funny answer, but what those above said is good. Outside for the garbage disposal. In our part of the world you need to put those trash stickers on it corresponding to the weight or size, presumably a mattress is the max category. Alternatively, you can go to one of those trash recycling centers in most towns, (same place that take old furniture, computer hardware).

In Basel you can only dump large items (for free) around three times a year, so it might not be as convenient as once a month.

phone your local council and ask them. There are heavy fines for dumping rubbish! In Bern we have to buy a sticker and attach it to the item, and the normal rubbish collection take it away, but you live in Zurich... so please start here: http://www.abfall.zh.ch/internet/bd/...fallarten.html

I am not from Zürich but according to the homepage of Zürich there is a cargo tram once a month a these stations:

Albisrieden: Tram 3, Bus 80

Burgwies: Tram 11

Hirzenbach: Tram 9

Universität Irchel: Tram 9, Tram 10, Bus 39

Letzigrund: Tram 2

Seebach: Tram 14, Bus 75

Strassenverkehrsamt (Ersatz Laubegg): Tram 13, Bus 32, Bus 89

Tiefenbrunnen: Tram 2, Tram 4, Bus 33

Wartau: Tram 13, Bus 80

Wollishofen: Tram 7

Further details are available here:

Cut it in half, then half again and keep going to its really fine and then flush it away

Thank god! it seems Richdog finally got himself his new mattress Hurrah!

I found it very amusing how you were forever cropping up in threads of people selling mattresses, I really wanted to ask why you just didn't go to Ikea when the ones people were selling were never the right type or size

So you missed the mattress thread Nicky?

Serious mattress advice needed... need more sleep...

But you sound awfully happy about this news...

In Oerlikon, the big recycling/rubbish dump is Recyclinghof Hagenholz, Hagenholzstr 110, 8050 Zurich. It's open from 7am to 5pm during the week, and 7.30am to 12pm on Saturdays.

You can get rid of everything there (furniture including mattresses, electrics, old bicycles, etc). I think Zurich residents receive some 'Entsorgungs-Coupons' in the post - 4 free coupons per year per household, each allows you to take 100kg of rubbish to the dump. I think you have to pay if you don't have a coupon, but you can probably get hold of one, maybe check out www.erz.ch

The other big one in Zurich is Recyclinghof Werdholzli.
