Hi, I'm wondering if anyone here has experience or expertise in residential building code. Specifically tolerancing and measuring errors in floor plan during inside renovations. I have found the engineering and architectual body SIA which publishes standards on the subject. Does anyone know which standard might apply here? SIA 414/X? Does anyone have the publication?

We are rennovating the entry, guest bath and kitchen. A change of the floorplan in the entry, guest bath was made and we find that one of the new walls is significantly not parallel to the base wall to which it is dimensioned in the new plans. The contractor and architect both make vague excuses and neither have taken any measurements during our meetings/discussions as they are indifferent to my objections. Neither can tell me what tolerance zones and measurement methods are applicable in this situation.

I have experience making technical drawings as a mechanical engineer and understand the challenges in understanding and applying certain standards as well as the importance of making drawings in a way so as not to be misinterpreted.

I am also curious if architectural plans need to explicitly mention the standards if they are to be applied, or if they are obliged to apply by means of government regulations?

Given the situation I would look for another architect to get a second opinion on the matter. Might be useful later should you want to pursue this to get some kind of compensation

Get a "Bauleiter" involved and tell the contractors to square up. If you have get legal insurance involved too.

Contractors / builders will always go the path of least resistance unless you tell them how to do it right. Sad truth.
