So I went Saturday night to the place to check it out as the menu looked too good.
First of all the decor of the place was ok, nothing special or really African but it was ok. The waiter we had was a nightmare, he barley spoke any German and no Enlglish. He was from Egypt so I was a bit confused and it was frustrating but ok.
The food however was fantastic. We had a load of mixed starts to begin with, some meat, fish in an African style which was nice, also some mussles in a African curry sauce which were lovely!
For main course, between four of us, we orderded Kudu (African cow) Springbok, Impala Gulasch and lastly osterich. They were all really nice but the osterich was amazing, I highly recommend it. Also although we didnt eat it the giant prawns looked great, give em a try!
Wine was South African, with a discription Turtle Hill, cant remember the name something with a G, but was sooooo nice.
All in all, good nice, great food, nice people and environment was ok. Would go back there again.
I've eaten at La Cote last weekend, this restaurant is a carnivore's dream. They're ready to serve a good vegetable platter and their thin, crunchy french fries to an accompanying vegetarian (like me) but to go there without eating meat defeats the purpose.
I was assured they do an excellent entrecôte café de paris. There's also cow haunch (sp?) on offer, which is served on a table coal grill. This and the smokers can make the air thick at times. There are just a few meat dishes on the menu card that haven't changed for years, the La Cote is a restaurant with its own traditions.
The waiters are friendly. Prices for main dishes are 35-50 Fr.
Reservation strongly recommended.

Any tips on places one can have a decent mail meal on a tight budget? I intend spending 2 weeks in CH in April, and the SA Rand is plummetting in value as we speak, so the budget is getting tighter by the day? - I wIll be based in Zurich in a B & B.
Yes, please do let me know. I haven't been there for a while - it's not the type of place to go just "anytime". But it is lovely.

A standard dish from an asian cafe (not restaurant) type place like Beyond, Tiffins, Ah Hua, Chopsticks or pizza/pasta would be about CHF18-22.
If you're looking for something cheaper, I'd suggest head to Langstrasse where there are plenty of little places around with many grocery places also having small take-aways. Walk long Josefstr. There are some indian places around there that might give you a good fill for about CHF10-15. I think Kabal's is around there (there's an indian restaurant thread that discusses cost of indian food on EF).
But anything less than CHF10, you're mostly looking at kebabs, I think.

Lee, Kudu is not African cow, as you were probably told at the Restuarant. It is a graceful, majestic buck with soulful eyes. The males have beautiful horns. See the below pics. Bon appetit!

It was great! Highly recommend the Florhof to anyone! Very romantic and stylish without being too posh or up its self.
The staff were friendly and spoke perfect English (also we were given English menus) so didn't have to try my piegeon German. The food was amazing! Try the Salmon! An extensive wine list so even those would be experts can find something!
Will go back, but as you say its very much a special occassion place (bill was over 200CHF) and my girlfriend loved it!

There is a (not so) new restaurant in Zurich - Neu Oerlikon, it's called " Not Guilty ".
Basically its a Natural Food restaurant, as they claim.
Most of the items are salads with very nice dressing..., and what I like is the Dal Soup...yummy...You can add beef/chicken/shrimp on top of that...
So far, I tried the BBQ Shrimp salad and Salmon salad...

I have been in here lots of times. Egg-sandwiches are a delight, as are the tandoori-chicken sandwiches. They have a proper lunch menu too, so its not just take away snacks.
Its as close to Pret-a-Manger as Zürich area has yet come. The coffee is pretty good too.
I was in there when it first opened and one of the two guys working there described it as: "take away food like McDonalds, but better food". His colleague gave him the most filthy look you can ever imagine.
I recommend it, despite the stupid name.

This particular trip is special for us because my mother will be joining us for a few days before we head home to NYC.
We will have only 3 dinners out (we are invited to friends some other evenings) so I am considering with her:

Casa Ferlin
Walliser Keller OR Le Dezaley (she requested fondue - which is better? We usually go to Racelette Stube but I'd like to try something new with her).

Important is that we don't go to places that serve what we can easily get in NYC - so for example no Indian, no Asian, no Japanese...

Have been many times to Veltlinerkeller, Zeughauskeller, Antinori Opfelchammer, Piccoli Academia, Florhof, etc etc
Would like to get off the tourist restaurant circuit (for ourselves, not with my mother)...certainly happy to leave the central city...

Finally made it to Giesserei near Oerlikon last night.
For those of you who don't know it's an industrial complex that has been converted into a restaurant , bar and I believe, a club.
The restaurant is in the main section of the building. Top marks for the factory interior, which apart from a spring clean is as nature intended. You could wheel your car in there and replace your transmission shaft and I am sure no one would notice. Urban chic it ain't, but it had the ambience of a rave venue. In fact they had some man-sized speakers which could be put to good use. A great party venue.
The food was good, and the daily menu limited to one instance of meat/fish/veggie: starters 12-18chf, mains 30-42chf.
I had a wonderful fish on Asparagus, and the deserts were a work of art from the sauce kitchen of Jackson Pollack.
The service was excellent and attentive.
It gets a lots of corporate clientele - indeed there was a party from ABB and CS during my visit, so the conversation hub-bub in the venue was suitably dull. That said there were clearly a few cuckolded partners in there looking guilty , so it made for an entertaining experience.
I would recommend this place, although the bar appeared to be closed whihc limited the venue to simply dinner. As it is located close to Oerlikons indutrial wasteland aka neu Oerlikon, there is not a lot else around there but its just a coupl of minutes from Oerlikon station and has parking.
Worth a visit methinks.

I would say this is a one-of-a-kind Restaurant in Zurich, as far as I have seen. The restaurant is built around an actual airplane. The 'Wingwalker' Bar is 'actually' on the wing. The smoker's lounge is inside the airplane.
The food choices are interesting as well. They have appetizers, main course dishes etc... from different corners of the world, and the names are quite interesting too. And the overall theme is that you are actually boarding a restaurant in an airplane. Like, when entering the place you get a card at the reception which is called 'The Boarding Pass'...on which everything is charged.
I would really suggest visiting this place atleast once. The view from the seating outside is quite nice. The place actually overlooks one the runways.
The food is great. Nice selection of drinks. And then there is the Smoker's Lounge...
The place is generally booked, so it is suggested to make the reservations a day in advance.

I went there a few months ago with a large group, and ate a reasonable thai dish. As I think been discussed before themed restaurants are not the swiss forte. It was an OK experience.
