I wonder if you heard of a similar situation.
I am a C permit holder and currently live abroad on the authorization of absence (put my C permit on hold for 4 years).
I am planning to return to Switzerland, but would like to move to Vaud canton instead of the previous Geneva canton, which allowed me to put my permit C on hold.
Would I be successful in re-establishing my permit C with the new canton?
Speak with the authorities. However you might do best to return to Geneva until you have your permit back in your hand. Then move to Vaud.
A C-permit does permit you free movement within Switzerland, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

This. Get a short term rental in Geneva, get your permit, then move.

If you are going to a small town or village in Vaud ask them the best way to do it. Otherwise return to Geneva, then de register and move to Vaud. Try not to be in Geneva on 31 December for tax reasons.

Yes, particularly in Geneva. It is quite common with the decades-old housing shortage. They won’t even be surprised when you tell them you found something in VD. When I moved to GE in 1985 I didn’t find permanent lodgings until almost four months after I arrived.

From what I’ve heard 4 years C permit freeze is very hard to get. Without going into details can you share what helped you get approval?
In my situation, I asked for the permit freeze because I needed to take care of my senior mom, who lives abroad.
I shared some of my mom’s medical reports. The process was quite easy, made the request online and it was approved within days.

I don’t know if it’s still the case now but a few years ago it was a piece of cake freezing a C permit in Neuchâtel. Some cantons are more difficult than others.
A bit older thread, but maybe it helps someone. I just went through this exact scenario myself, just different cantons - got my C permit, 1 month later put it on hold in Kt. Zug, 3 years abroad, then resumed in Aargau. I did not ask about it before moving out, relied on Swiss common sense.
There was absolutely no issue, gemeinde said it’s a standard process, they just needed the original confirmation of C permit freeze and then issued me a new one (interestingly it was not issued with a new 5y validity period, but the 5y period from original issue date was resumed, so mine is now valid only for 2y, then I have to renew)

That makes perfect sense since it’s not a new C permit but the continuation of a current permit which was put on hold for a while.
Am I also right in thinking that you cannot put a permit on hold past its expiry date? So if your permit expires in 1 year you can’t freeze it for 3?

Belief doesn’t need evidence. It’s a belief, doh.
It means the person agrees with the statement already given but has no proof. Her use of the word “believe” makes it clear that to her, this is a hunch and those who need more than a hunch should investigate and find the proof they need.
