Revolut, N26 or maybe other Digital Bank?

I've been using Revolut Metal for a while.

It has been nice, however I do challenge it now, as some time ago they removed the insurance package they provide with Metal (still valid in other countries but not in Switzerland!).

Now I'm looking in to best alternative. Seems there is also n26 Metal with solid insurance included, plus they back up the 100K on the account (which Revolut does not).

What's your experience here? Any suggestions if n26 is a good alternative, pros and cons, or maybe other alternative Credit Cards and accounts.

I'm not keen on the CS and UBS as they really rip off when you pay in another currency with their CC. I have them as backup use in Switzerland only.

I use N26 (just the regular free card) and am very happy with it. I just transfer EUR 500 from my UBS account with a SEPA transfer and pay CHF 0.30 for the transfer. Afterwards I spend my Euros happily with my N26 card. It works perfectly.

Can't help you with the special insurance but just as a regular customer I am happy with N26

I am using N26 and Revolut.

(I haven't verified the information and they have change)

N26:

-no IBAN number in Switzerland

+3 or 5 free redraw at EU ATM (don't know how much)

Revolut

+IBAN number in Switzerland (but not personal in CH)

-redraw at ATM limited to $300/month

+Eazy to have multiple currencies

I got revolut but equally happy to switch: does any of the neo-banks offer "proper" credit cards? Not a debit card dressed up as if it was one?

What is the advantage of the Metal part? if it is cashback, there are the migros and coop credit cards, as well the cashback cards from swisscards.

the best answer may be here: https://n26.com/fr-fr/tarifs

I don't think so, to offer credit is another set of regulations that is a hard lift even for rich companies like Revolut

You dont need to do this yourself. Even most banks in Switzerland use either Swisscards or Cornercard to do it... but credit cards have a couple of pretty simple advantages over debit cards and thats not even the credit bit :-)

Like ?

Thanks, for 180 Eur/year it seems a good package, although some of them are maybe redundant when living in Switzerland (SUVA?) and some may have some maximal or double charging (the one about delays in flight ... can you ask for the refund up to 500 if the company is providing you what they have to, as per EU regulation?).

1. Ability to use it online - many shops accept credit cards but not debit cards... for example for airline tickets.

2. Safety when shopping online (the ability to cancel a payment and open a dispute).

3. Being able to use "potential credit" for things like the security deposit of a rental car to restaurant bookings. You dont actually spend the money, its just "reserved" on your credit line, so the company know you will be able to pay.

Agree on 2-3

1 works fine with Revolut, never had a single declined transaction with all possible airlines I've flown with

Some pay at the pump petrol stations and motorway tolls in France and Spain declined Revolut and another mastercard debit card we have. They only accepted credit card.

I suspect your problem is not about Credit /Debit.

In France, there is no credit (or I don't think so) like in other country. You have the choice to debited right away (like a debit card) or at the end of the month. In my knowledge it's not possible to have a loan and repay later like a credit card. Also often it's the same card with an option to select or not.

I think your problem is with the magnetic stripe, not enable by default with Revolut.

Of course I may be wrong, but you can test it next time.

I hope it's helping.

I think you are wrong there - the question is not what French people use, but what cards the card readers at the automated highway toll stations accept. I never had an issue with a credit card there, but I dont think they take debit cards like revolut.

Side note: I got my credit card skimmed at a French highway toll gate once... so watch out there!

So what do French with a debit card Do?

How come "you think" they don't take revolut?

To avoid skimming N26 let you disable the magnetic stripe. (disable by default)

It means I tried my revolut card once, didnt work. Didnt bother to try another dozen time to if it was a fluke, but just used a credit card.

What French people do? Most have the teleboxes for automatic payment anyways. And the payment terminals might very much make a difference between a domestic card and a foreign one. The small payments are deducted really fast to not hold up traffic. I assume they dont wait for a confirmation... with a credit card is the chance really high that there will be 2.80 EUR credit available, so they dont really need to secure the payment. If I remember correctly is the revolut card something rather exotic, like an estonian(?) debit card?
