Digital boarding passes only from the 12th November. Even if you want/need a paper one you have to have checked in online first. So older people who don’t have a mobile or use the internet can’t fly with them any more. Well done!
Oh, and if you don’t check in online you’re subject to a fee as well!
“One of the advantages of checking in using the myRyanair app is that passengers will avoid costly check-in fees at the airport, which can be between $30-60 per passenger. Those who fail to check-in online will still be subject to pay Ryanair’s check-in fee.”
I like to check in online, but I print out a paper boarding card. I don’t want to use a phone which can run out of batteries or an app which invades my privacy.
Geriatric millenial here. I check-in online, print the pass because I know phones fail.
But, I can’t check-in online a lot of times because non-EU passport. I have to go the staffed check in counter, to show passport and residence permit. So, what happens with all non-EU destinations? Can undocumented travellers do the check-in online without worries?
PS. it was on the article, boarding passes in paper version are bad, but…border controls
The exceptions to Ryanair’s new policy include any flights from Morocco or from Tirana, Albania, all of which require printed boarding passes.
Absolutely correct. That thing in my pocket is a camera, probably the best I’ve ever had, it’s an encyclopaedia on steroids, it’s how I contact my siblings and friends on different time zones than I am; it has my tickets and confirmations for my next journey, bus to Nyon, train to Geneva Airport, flight to Zurich, Flight to … and howe again.
See I’m on the internet so chat to people around the world all day, look things up, etc, without needing a phone to do it. And if I want to use a camera I have one of my own and husband has hundreds of them. Mobile phone offers me nothing. Husband does have one, but mostly it’s just an expense since he rarely uses it for anything.
More and more though we’re being pushed towards having to have one which annoys me. I can no longer access my Boots account because they introduced 2FA authentication which needs a mobile. Hospital here when it tells me there’s a copy of the insurance info stuff for us needs to send an SMS message to unlock that.
Just because you don’t have a mobile does not mean the you can lump the rest of us old folks in along with you. I don’t know a single old person who is not competent in using their mobile phone.
Don’t fly with them if you don’t want to but know this - you are the odd one out not the other way around.
My mum died over fifteen years ago aged almost 80 and she knew how to use a mobile phone.
Admittedly it wasn’t a smart phone but we would text each other daily.
Most older people are perfectly competent in using mobile phones and it’s pretty rare these days not to have one.
She’d had a laptop for years too and used it to Skype with us so our son could interact with her face to face even though we lived in different countries.
My friend in London is 83 and more tech savvy than me who’s about 20 years younger. On a recent visit to London he’d bought a second hand iPhone and there was a few things he wasn’t sure about so my OH showed him and he’d taken it all in.
If I’m travelling alone I like to have a printed boarding pass with me, otherwise my OH has the digital ones on his phone. I’ve only ever been on Ryanair once, return from Baden Baden to Sofia last year. The interior was falling to bits and pretty dirty if I’m being honest. This was our only option, OH had a bad experience with them years ago on a business trip from London to Brescia in Italy.
I fly often & will happily use Ryanair, although I am paying 5 times more in 10 days time to fly EasyJet as then Ryanair flight leaves around 22.00 & I would rather arrive earlier & get a good nights sleep than save £100
Ryanair and easyJet deliver a smooth experience when you follow their terms i.e. check in online, bring a bag that fits the sizer, and be at the gate when boarding opens. Their punctuality and low fares come from repeatable, time-boxed turnarounds and a stripped-back service that limits delays.
I’m personally a huge fan of easyJet, I’m even a Plus member since I fly many times a year from ZRH to LTN and LGW to see family. When I lived in Basel I also used to use the Ryanair service to Stanstead, again zero issues over more than a dozen flights.
There is also flight club which is by invitation (which I originally ignored), it allows you to change flights for free. My wife got an invite & I searched my email & see I was invited 3 years before & had been paying to change flights!
