Ryanair - another reason not to fly with them

Last time I flew was back in 2019 to the States and I did spend some of the time wondering why on earth (or sky) we threw ourselves hundreds of miles into the air in such fragile machines - crazy! :upside_down_face:

Re: the easyJet flight club thing, I think it was recently done away with because my OH had it. He’s had an email today to say they’re introducing something else.

I understand. These days no one flies to the USA unless they have Donny’s permission and even that might be gone by the time you arrive. As for safety -do you still get in a car?

Yes, quite often. And yes, I know more people die in car accidents than from flying. Maybe it was just because I was older, but thought we must be crazy doing this sorta stuff! :laughing: Mind you I also enjoy flying though I don’t do it very much.

I never print boarding pass and neither do my 75 yo parents who even don’t have a printer.

The funny thing happens at the international gates in ZRH. When you fly to Canada (maybe in some other countries too), your boarding card has to be stamped by some person in the gates area before you board the plane. For the passengers that don’t have paper boarding passes they give an empty border pass and stamp it (one stamp for each family member). :grinning_face: You have to show this card when boarding a plane (actually, 30 m away from the place where it was stamped).

Yes, this is the funny part.

Airlines are responsible of verifying if passengers meet the legal requirements to enter the destination country. If they allow to travel passengers that don’t meet the legal requirements, airlines get a warning or fines for not doing their job.

This implies passenger’s docs must be verified by a human at some point. Usually, this check is done at the check-in booth, or as you mentioned airline employees check docs just before boarding.

Airlines want to save labor costs, it’s OK. But, there’s also work to be done. In the case of Ryanair, probably 90+% of their passengers will travel without talking to an airline employee. Great, they will reduce labor costs. But, international travel means crossing borders, and this implies verifying docs, no way around it. The very purpose of flying is to travel far far away, across literal oceans. Otherwise, just take the f**** train or drive, no need to fly :slight_smile:

Why don’t they check it during the passport control? Isn’t it a purpose of a passport control?

Normally it’s the country the passenger is leaving from that checks the passenger’s documents. They are not going to check for requirements of the country the passengers are going to. That is the airline’s responsibility.

The last minute check is to ensure the documentation is correct and complete and not damaged, something machines cannot do, at least yet.

Why should I? Just because I’m in a minority doesn’t mean my opinions/views don’t matter.

It’s like stores giving discounts only if you use their apps. I’m being discriminated against. Why should using an app give you a discount and going into the store itself doesn’t? Should be for everyone regardless of whether they have an app or not.

The discounts are the reward for you in allowing the retailer to know your grocery shopping habits - and so be able to plan and stock more effectively which saves them money and reduces waste.
There’s also targeted advertising.

Do you really think any of us would have store cards and apps if there was no incentive?

I’m all for incentives, just don’t restrict them to apps. If you’re going to discount then do it instore so everyone who shops there can benefit.

Not really- that won’t give them weekly or monthly shopping info for a person.

The incentive isn’t just to get you to shop there. The incentive is to see what you have bought and to get your loyalty so you continue to shop there more, or to spend more when you do.

Most people have the apps. For the retailer, they work.
You are in the minority. You are also free to shop where you want.

You’re like someone wanting the health benefits of running or cycling without actually putting in the miles.

Mobile phones can be purchased for around 60 CHF. Get one.

Why buy and then pay monthly to access for something I’ll never use? We’re already pretty much doing that with husband’s mobile. :zany_face:

Which airline is stamping your bording pass? I don’t recall them doing that with mine… Could be the Canadian Passport though.

Swiss airline and Swiss passport.

I’m OK with that, unless they write an exlusive price for app users on the price tag in the shop. This is unacceptable. Same as when Migros indicates the price which is only valid if you buy at least 2 items (which is indicated below with a very small font).
