Salary question: contractor to permanent

Hi all,

I have another salary question but it is a bit atypical.

I am a pharmacist with 2 masters and one PhD degrees (in addition to my pharmacy degree), currently working at a multinational pharma company as a contractor via a multinational staffing agency. I have around 8 years of work experience (in addition to some freelance work in parallel to my studies).

I take a monthly salary corresponding to a set number of weekly hours and 25 days per year a holiday in addition to the salary (so it is not an hourly/daily contractor job).

I am expecting that the company will offer me a permanent role which would include a base salary + a bonus + a benefits package.

Obviously, the staffing agency takes a significant margin on top of my contractor salary to pay my social contributions and its staff and make profit (significant enough as a multinational with big overhead).

What do you think should I ask for when I negotiate the permanent offer?

Is there a specific factor that can be applied as such?

I am assuming that I can ask to keep my current contractor salary as the base salary for the perm role and what the company pays for the staffing agency now can cover the rest (bonus + benefits) as I think this margin is probably >30%.

Any thoughts or experience here?

Thanks in advance!

you need to look at market rates for the role you are being offered and the value you bring in terms of skill and experience.

roles have salary ranges, from that you can look at the market rate.

Thanks OBone ... The thing is, probably the role/title will be negotiable since the team is small and the role will be newly created so I'd like to work out the salary regardless of the title

Sort of in a similar situation... any tips? Thanks!

contracting usually has about +60%-+100% rates vs standard salary ( from employee perspective) while it's +35% to contract from employer perspective ) so do the math , check market rates .

Changing from contract to permanent means you become part of social security plans and overall cost to the company remains about the same ( fixed "desk / mgmt costs") - it's more the fact that you are valued and comapny would not want to lose important employee .

So now we know that you like flexing about your 2 masters degrees and a PhD, in addition to your pharmacy degree.......but don't know anything about the fact that internal salaries are not the same as contractor rates

It's really hard to answer this question without knowing basics like your current pay, your company salary band and even what grade you will be going within the company. Have you looked on glassdoor.ch to see comparable positions are paid?

What research have you done so far for comparable positions in your industry?

I am sorry, but I don't see the logic behind your statement. first the role and its responsibilities needs to be defined so that the role can be graded into the HR system of "big pharma company" and that will define the range for salary.

yes, your diplomas will have influence on the salary but not as much as defined responsabilities of the role.... you can't say "I want x money", find me the role that is payed as that. In my > 15 years in "Big pharma companies" I have never heard of that type of negotiation.
