A helicopter woke me up in the early morning. Helicopters pass nearby on the to the way to the cantonal hospital frequently so went back to sleep without a worry.
But, what a disgrace. Aarau is boring, nothing ever happens and this is a big compliment.
I guess thereâs a lot of info the police has not yet released. The events seem to have triggered a few switches on the police response plans. Not normal to mobilize 100+ police and the helicopter in the night.
Press conf right now. Shootings at 2 different locations, bullet casings of a short gun, and casings of a ârifleâ.
This may have looked like a terrorist attack in the first mins. We thought about going to city center because itâs the annual weekend of live music. But, wine shopping to Cornaux (NE) in the afternoon, too tired for the night. This is sad, Musig I der Altstadt is one of the few happy days around here.

A 31 year old Irish woman was stabbed and killed in Roaenheim this weekend.

Maybe gun hobbyists can identify the sound of this gun. Thereâs a video recorded from the BlĂ€uenstrasse in Erlinsbach (AG), about 1.25km from where the victims got shot (below the stands for the horse track). The location of the shooter(s) is unknown.
There happens to be several reliable witnesses: the guards in charge of the event security. They said the shots came from âoutsideâ. The stands are surrounded by a small forest.
No more speculation tonight, hope the police will explain more tomorrow.
Edit: some casings found by the police in a parking 350+m from the victims. But, thereâs a forest in between.

Shooting randomly at the crowd from far away:
According to operations manager Captain Matthias Schildknecht, shots were taken from a distance of up to almost 300 meters to the festival grounds.
The weapons lost in the 1990s:
An assault rifle was also used. According to the cantonal police Aargau, casings of two calibers were found at the scene: 9 millimeters and 5.45x39 millimeters. The smaller caliber is used, among other things, for guns and submachine guns, the larger one for assault rifles.
The caliber 5.45x39 millimeters is used in the Soviet assault rifle AK-74 and various replicas.
A guy was arrested in relation to the shooting today at 1h00: 43 YO Swiss. Currently, the police assumes only 1 shooter.
The next press conference by the cantonal police: Wednesday Sep 2 at Schafisheim (AG). No more info to be released until the press conference.
Schafisheim? Curious choice of venue. Maybe they expect dozens of journalists.

Iâm really amazed that they manage to catch people in such cases.
If someone goes at 2am when presumably nobody can see him (no witnesses). Shoots random people, so thereâs no motive to follow up on. Then so long has he doesnât leave a muddy trail to his house or have his phone on him, how do they even find someone in such a situation?
It seems a lot of resources were spent on the search. Such effort can only be done when events are not that frequent.
Also, there might be a bit of luck: resident of Aargau that applied for a license to buy the rifle. If resident of other canton, the gun register may not be available that quick.
Of course theyâll nab whoever is outside at 2AM, hell in Basel traffic lights are pulsing after 22:00, no good person is outside after 23:00 
The point is, at 2am, you can probably escape and be gone before the police managed to be alerted and get out to look for you.
Nah, I really doubt it, itâs not a big country, doesnât have many roads. For whatâs essentially a mass shooting I expect the police to be speeding out to the place the event happened en masse within 3-5 minutes from the moment they got alerted.
Letâs hope they were stupid enough to have a phone on them, because if so, someoneâs door is about to get kicked in.

They got a suspect - a 43yo Swiss person. Letâs see how the background of the suspect played into this. From not integrated immigrant to angry man who didnât like the music and completely flipped, everything is up for grabsâŠ
Lot of details are open, but some things start to get clear.
No martyrdom. The guy did not sacrifice himself for whatever belief or motive behind the shootings. It took a ~24h hunt to catch him.
There is some level of discrimination. It might be attacking people on a night where the whole city had a festive environment regardless of music genre. Or the electro party might have been chosen for specific reasons.
I guess investigators try to determine now the motives: mental instability, aggression, political/ideological or religious motives, the specific intent to make people quit doing something through violence and subsequent fear. Authorities have been prudent so far. No rush to use the âTâ word.
