shopping centre in france accross border from lausanne

Well...I was asking about food shopping. Or are you guys referring to the OP?

Oh my mistake, I read the whole thread but quickly.

I years ago did some shopping for clothes and gym-shoes in Annemasse. And later on did some shopping in Ferney-Voltaire just behind Cointrin-Airport. There is a hotel-bar right behind the border where they had the best Calvados I ever got, and that at a minimal price. For clothes I however give preference to Milano where the available stuff is more my style and to my liking than in London

In 1958, the aunt wanted to buy stamps but as she did not speak French, Mum went to the post office for her, and half way there met an Algerian "trader" (postcards, souvenirs, more rubbish and "cosas y otras") and told him that there was a souvenir hungry American lady up there. The man came up, sold practically all his material to aunt Gertrude and bought me lots of ice cream from the newsshop there

Are you aware of the significance of Evian for Algerians ? Did you know that Air Algérie airplanes on the eastern approach (westwind) to Cointrin when near Evian turn eastwards and then make a sharp left-turn so that everybody out of the windows on the left sees Evian, and the captain in Arabic, French and English shortly explains the sight. Absolutely unique

The oracle told me there are 4 grocery stores in Evian.

I was aware of the Evian Accords because there was the 50th anniversary earlier on this year. I didn't, however, know about the Air Algerie flight patterns, that's cool. Thanks

I just found out that there is a Carrefour at Thonon-les-bains. Has anyone been there before? Seems not so far from the ferry harbour, so easy accesibilty from Lausanne I reckon?

I lived in Annecy and I really didn't find much variety as far as clothes go... but then I'm a guy. And prices where pretty much the same as in Switzerland.

And in Paris, clothes are more expensive even. Things to purchase in France are

- wines

- cheese

- pharma-products + medicines

- vegetables (since the late 1980ies)

- lamb

and I by this refer to Mainland-France west of the Vosges/Vogesen

Have you visited the shopping outlet in aubonne? It's just in front of IKEA and they have sale all year round too.

Here in Annecy we seem to have little else apart from clothes shops. Many of them very posh (Galérie Lafayette alone has dozens of brands). Together with the nearby out-of-town centre at Epagny for the cheaper end, you'll have trouble finding more choice than we've got.

For clothes and not too far from Lausanne, you have several options:

if you want to avoid too much traffic, and stay on the Lausanne-Geneva line, you can go to Chavannes de Bogis (in Switzerland) or in Aubonne (outlet center) which still offer decent price and options. In France, in the Pays de Gex, you should go to Val-Thoiry, not many other destinations possible.

Then if you want to push it a bit further and enjoy a nice old city, you should make it to Annecy where you'll have much more choices.

I have been reading through this old thread because I am researching clothes shopping options.

My wife and I live in Lausanne and on a train home from Zurich yesterday her suitcase was stolen which contained almost all of her clothes. (I also read the multiple threads that exist about this but had nothing to add in that area, we have reported it to SBB, hope to at least get back the suitcase and clothes minus valuables but have received our lesson).

We did a quick shop for undergarments at coop, and she is getting buy on some very casual clothes for now, but will need to restock almost her entire wardrobe apart from coats and jackets.

Is it worth crossing the border really for clothes? And can anyone recommend some good stores in Lausanne for restocking the basics.

If she can wait a little bit, the sales will be starting in January and then then you can get some good deals. Manor had a good selection. But I would take her on a shopping trip to Anncey or Lyon.

sorry to hear, how did it happen? The online sales are pretty good right now. Depends on her tastes, budget and size too of course

Thanks for this advice, we will check out the sales in town and online. But I think also a trip to France might be needed as suggested.

She left her suitcase just out of eyesight enough for it to be taken without our noticing.
