Shops for Scotch Malt Whisky?

Depending upon what you are looking for and if you can get a membership, TopCC at Sihlbrugg has some good stuff at the best prices I've seen in Switzerland.

From memory I've had from there

BenRiach 16

Arran 14

Balvenie Rum Cask

Not to mention particularly cheap Tanquery 10.

While the OP is probably looking for range and tastings, not rock bottom prices, let me go there (as I do love a bargain)....

While the range is limited to just the big /usual names (one none of the cult favourites you have mentioned above), Denner sells cheaper than any duty free store have seen.

The only time I have seen cheaper is when there is a La Foire aux Vins (FAV) in the big French Supermarkets, when prices look impossibly low on both wines and spirits.

Just in case any of you Whisk(e)y lovers in and around Berne are interested, or even connaissseurs from further afield.......

Martin Monnier, is hosting the first (of hopefully many) WHISKY HÖCK on 28th of October in the premises of his shop MONNIER TRADING in 2557 Studen, Büetigenstrasse 30.

You can taste any whisky you want, regular ones will be around 2-5.- CHF a Snifter and the very old and rare ones around 10.- for a taster.

As they will also prepare some snacks to go with the tasting on the evening, you are required to annouce your attendance via Doodle , see link below:

In case you can not attend, then please cancel at least a day before the event, via email to:

[email protected]

Unfortunately this time I will be out of town and not attend, but the Pirate and I are planning to attend the next one for certain!!

Hi, thanks for the info. about Bern, sounds good.

I would also like to remind people about the Scotch Malt Whisky Society SMWS in Schonenwerd AG, although membership is required they do have a good range of cask strength whiskies & do regular tastings: www.smws.ch

Cheers, Greg.

Yes I mentioned Denner, esp. for things like Lagavullin 16, funny that there is not much in Aldi or Lidl; Manor & Coop do occasional seasonal discounts. France being one of the world's biggest malt drinkers do some good online discounts if you know someone who lives over the border...

http://www.glenfahrn.de/ Found another shop, not to far away - Glenfahrn offers its customers an extraordinary assortment of fine spirits. It's just over the border in Germany, north of Zurich, for your drinking delectation.

You could also try these guys (you can sign up for their news letter as well). From memory it is part of the Diaego Spirts group.

They often have low volume/limited production special bottles that they profile. They used to have tastings and theme dinners. You get details via their newsletter.

Website in DE and FR. They offer delivery to your home.

I'm not an expert but friends told me that you can find some very good bottles and rarities at this shop in Zurich:

Gnüsserei Produktionen

Giessereistrasse 18

Im Puls 5

8005 Zürich / Schweiz

i hope this does not break the forum rule but personally I shop :

1- Netherlands, including border delivery and... backyard roads back home. very nice online shop there.

2- french or german shops, each trip. i love whisky, but with 1.5 bottle/adult/trip, i am good. very nice selection these days, there is even in germany a special peatted version of the french armorik that is a killer... german edition only, god knows why

3- duty free with business trips.

4- RIO in wallisellen. tried other rio's but fewer selection. they know their trade have have a very good selection.

hope that helps

you can sell now, you got over 10 posts

I go and shop in Scotland...the Whisky never makes it back home to CH, though!

Way too expensive there :-) Although now cheaper with the value of the GBP.

Denner has some nice sales in whisky. In the past I used to buy at Ullrich in Berlin but since you can only take liquids in small bottles.....

Not cheap but

And looks like it’s almost time for tickets to go on sale for the whisky train.

Scot & Scotch closed a couple of month ago.

Great little shop in Rapperswill

www.whiskystore.ch/

A few doors down is a nice little bar with a good selection of Whiskys too, I believe the 2 owners are pals

So, have not logged in for a while, but here are some updates.

Cheapest high quality whisky shop I have found so far is https://casillo-getraenke.ch

They do monthly (free) tasting sessions & have great prices.

There are also Whisky Tasting sessions in the Cadenhead's shop in Baden that have a very wide range. http://cadenheads.ch

WoW (World of Whisky) - the Signature Dealer in St. Moritz are also worth a look at https://www.worldofwhisky.ch

Finally, the common RIO shops also sometimes have good prices and special offers, etc.

PS: The SMWS is in new hands & has moved to Château-d’Oex.

Cheers, Greg.

I managed a decent haul the last time I was in Germany, but have found some of the co-ops around Zurich actually have an OK selection... sometimes. Seems odd how they stock the stores.

Yes, I save my Coop Points to get discounts on std whiskys like Talisker & Lagavulin.

If anyone is passing down past Dornbirn in Austria, Moses has an amazing selection, including single cask specialty bottles. He's also really good about the tax form just reading "getraenke"

Lagavullin 16 is actually much easier to get than it was, say, 10 years ago. Even some Coops have it. Hey, even Pickwicks have it.

The Lagavulln Distiller's Edition 16 is more evasive. People have told me that back in the Uk Waitrose stocks it, but none of the stores I checked out had it. I have bought bottles back from Islay in the past but I don't get to go there as often as I'd like. Even the World of Whisky Shop in Heathrow seem to have stopped selling it - although the guy there told me this is temporary and they are getting it back because everybody keeps asking for it, but I've been waiting two years now and still not got any. So imagine my surprise at finding it in Zürich airport in the duty free arrivals. The guy there didn't seem to know much about it and wasn't very interested in it, so possibly this may be a temporary things, so buy it while you can.
