Skiing after stitches?

Two days back (Tuesday night) I got into a bad fall while ice skating and got a big wound inside my swollen lip + 6 stitches under my lip.

I had a skiing lesson booked for the weekend, and I have never skied before, so I am a bit scared since it's just 4 days after my injury. I went to the doctor to get a comment but the doc said I can go.

Is it really safe to go? I am completely unsure, and I won't be able to refund since the doctor said that he feels I can go.

Lip, legs, very far apart.

It's never really "safe" skiing but I'd say a mouth injury would be unusual for normal recreational skiing.

The only thing I could think about is whether vibrations and little bumps would be uncomfortable on the wound. But if it's your first time skiing you will not go so fast so you should be fine! Unlikely that you will fall flat on your face!

Do you think random people on EF know better than your Doctor? Just try not to fall flat on your face.

Guess it depends on whether the skiing bit is important or you are looking more for the "aprés ski" bit.....

Just avoid face plants

If you’re a good ice skater, you will find skiing easy. Sounds like a big ‘if’ though...

I worked as a ski instructor for 15 years and I don’t think I ever saw any of my beginners fall on their face. As a beginner you fall backwards or when you start to turn, sideways. But never on your face. In my entire 30 years on skis, I’ve injured my face 3 times - and those black eyes took quite some skill to achieve

It might be a source of discomfort depending on your sensitivity to cold air. For some reasons skin wounds are more sensible.

I guess a helmet and one of those neck socks covering your mouth may be enough to avoid this discomfort.

Your doctor has ultimately said it's fine to ski, so obviously you can go with no concerns that you are going to do any further damage. However, I just thought that as you said it's swollen you should take care with any jarring and bumping seeing as part of your mouth is a different size and more sensitive to what it is normally and you could nick it with your teeth if you suddenly bounce and it clatters your teeth together.

you should be ok just try to avoid additional damage to the area around the stitches.

If you feel anything unexpected (e.g. dizziness) stop and take a rest.

.....I've fallen flat on my face, albeit at the end of the day rather than the beginning !!

In that case, the OP should also probably avoid the apres-ski!

Should be ok if he stops before the kissing bit.....

My gf did it many times when she decided she was going to ski again for the first time since school. Crossed the tips then she's using her chin as a snow plough down the piste. Eventually she broke her arm but no face or mouth injuries.

depends on which lips...

You getting lippy now ?
