Smoking issue from neighbours

Thanks Amazonna. I really appreciate your sympathy and your help. The smoke seems to come from one corner in particular which then floods the room. I may have to pay myself to get it fixed for my peace of mind and sanity, and hopefully it works.

Another Aussie hi.

Anyway, I've had similar problems - can't help you with this one but I would say that it's your health at stake here. I hope you do get it sorted but, if you don't, if you end up moving and finding somewhere where no-smoking is stipulated in the paperwork then so much the better. Smoke anywhere in your house is bad enough, but in the bedroom? No-no-no-no. Moving may be a hassle but you'll get through it quickly enough.

It is very different here. And if the landlord finds someone else quickly, well if they're willing to live with smoke, that's their lookout.

Maye im too nice or considerate..if my neighbours were bothered by my smoking i would do what i could to help out. I think when you live in such small living spaces that people should try and work together, and be friends.

I dont plan to move, well at least not until my lease is up in 8 months...si am going to contact the Mietverband and take it from there.

On other news...

I was stuck in the Gubrist tunnel this morning after a inconsiderate AG plated Range Rover was playing bumper cars with two other victims stuck in the morning traffic.

The fumes in there were unbelievable, as it's such a huge risk to my health to breathe these toxic fumes should I leave my car while stationary and place bananas up everyone's exhaust pipe within the vicinity?

Just wondering, who dies first in a sealed garage? The person with the car engine running, or the person throwing a party with 50 smokers? Think about it...Overblown risks and "when the book suits."

Seriously, Paddy G shows the way to go and good luck with it. Welcome to Switzerland not part of fascist California/Australia/UK * Delete as applicable.

No recycle button on your car's ventilation system then??

Particles too small to get trapped by filters smart arse.

That would be a hoot to see...

Bananas flying everywhere...

It would be like a paintball arena, but with bananas!

It's not a filter...

Nothing changes Abfab still unable to find humour

*** Air from outside pulled in via climate control and filtering...Recycle button hit, recycles cabin air via internal filter system.***

Depends which car you have mine has x2 filter systems. Hitting recycle now means you send a loop of fumes around the cabin.

Yeah I acknowledge that fact but the reality is nothing willl change. The landlord is highly unlikely to invest the time and money in fixing some problematic structural issue that is allowing the smell of smoke to reach the above apartment. It would likely be a painstaking trial and error process that still might not satisfy the most sensitive of anti smokers.

Of course they have every right to try, but good luck with that.

Which is why I say, realistically, there are two options. Get used to it or move, as the solution of smoke free will be a long drawn out process that may not even be achievable or entertained by the powers that be.

But sure, worth a try.

You dont smoke so you can not even use that analogy.

If I chose to smoke in my house, in my living room, and my neighbours somehow got whiffs of it, and said could I smoke in my kitchen or somewhere else of course I would say no and I think most people would be the same. Its their issue, not mine.

Why shuld one need to have to get up from watching a film or drinking with guests or whatever, just becuase smoke might drift somewhere thats not of their concern, when they are smoking in their own home. Its not a case of being too nice or considerate its a case of your the one with the issue, be it with structural or personal dislikes and it is you that needs to find a solution, which I know you are trying to do, and the solution is not asking the neighbors to smoke elsewhere as they are in their home where they can choose to smoke wherever, and will of course smoke wherever they choose, as is their right.

If you think the floor doesn't meet building standards...Ask for an inspector from the Baukontrolle to have a look; I noticed it said ZH as your local, not sure if you meant Kt. or city of Zurich...

Oh I've noticed all right....................not as many smartarses in Canada!

I have a similar problem.. whenever my neighbour smokes and I happen to take a shower in my bathroom at the same time, I can smell the smoke from the vent.. it's horrible since I dont tolerate smoking.. also the neighbours who dont have a balcony, they just smoke in the hallways and in front of the elevator .. luckily I dont have to put up with this much longer..

Yeah I heard Canadians were bit dense too

But most can spell/type accurately

Then you have problems with your vent, as smell should go out, not in!

Maybe placing carpet in the room might help...or is there carpet already? The carpet may help to prevent the smell coming into your room. However, I hope you would not end up with a carpet smelling of smoke! In fact, your landlord would probably pay for it, it is worth a try...I hope you can work the problem out. When you are a non-smoker the smoke smell is more intense as well.

I have a similar issue with public toilets when the guy next to me drops a huge load.

Should I politely knock on the wall and ask for clear the air flush? Or should I come equipped with a gas mask?

Sorry I'm stuck with this one for life..
