Sold car, will only buy one in a few months, keep the plates?

The title says it all: I sold my car today for export and won’t buy another one straight away. Should I bother going to return the traffic plates or can I keep them and put them on the new car, when I buy it (possibly in February 22)?

You can return the plates. If you register another car within 12 months, you'll get the same plates back.

You cannot cancel the insurance until you return the plates.

You can send them by mail, or take them to the police.

In Vaud you return them to the côntrol des autos, the police would just sneer at you. They have much more important things to do.
