Split week by Germany and Switzerland

Dear all,

Could someone share some experiences or suggestions if it's feasible?

I am currently working in Germany for a German company, and probably I will move to its Swiss office to work but without delegation package. I am thinking whether it's possible to spend 2-3 days in Swiss office (Zurich), while still keep the wife and kids in Germany.

I don't see myself doing this too long, but happy to do this for 2 years max.

Does anyone has similar experiences? How will tax, health insurance, and permit work? I know that I definitely need to apply for a Swiss residence permit (as non-EU citizen). I think that I can keep my German permanent residence so I can do so?

Do you have permanent residency in Germany? If not you cannot work here with a G (Grenzgänger) permit as non EU.

Hi, I do have a permanent residence permit in Germany. I am thinking if possible to do this by also applying for a Permit B of Switzerland.

Actually I am happy to be relocated to Zurich later, but not that immediately due to family and kids.

Was living there, but now in Germany :P

Not that close to the border (though still in Bayern), from Zurich, still about 3-4 hours.

I am not thinking to commute on daily basis, so still probabaly will apply for Permit B (if possible), but not sure if this can work out these days.

Too far for a G permit, then.

Limit is 20km from the border.

This you cannot get unless you move permanently to Switzerland. Only a G permit is possible for cross-border workers and you don’t live near enough to the border to qualify for one.

Thanks. But if I get a Permit B, am I allowed to do this commuting? Will it significantly impact my tax, social security and health insurance??

Most of your time has to be spent here to keep the permit. Sure you can go back and forth.

You’d be taxed in Switzerland as you’re resident here, there’ll be social security deductions and you’d need Swiss health insurance. How that would all work with trying to keep the German side legal as well I don’t know. As a non-EU national far as I know if you take up residence in another country, i.e. B permit in Switzerland, you’d lose your right to any residency in Germany. But I’m not au fait with this sort of thing.

You may also get a permit L and yes, you ́d have to deregister from Germany (both with an L or B permit). Unless you want to pay certain things twice.

With a permit B or L you are still supposed to live and work in Switzerland.

If you deregister from Germany for more than 6 months, I think you loose the PR there. Double-check that.

Personally, unless you have an offer with a huge salary (much more than the EF poverty line of 120K), I think it's not worth it.

Keep in mind that here job security is much worse than in Germany, non-EU people without PR are treated like 2nd class people (can't buy property, have to renew their permit every year, etc...).

Wait to get a German passport, or any other EU passport, and then eventually think about moving here.
