I saw the last steam train to run in 1968. It came out of the Sough railway tunnel in Darwen on a farewell tour of Britain.
And I remember taking the Choo Choo train with my parents from Blackburn station to wherever, if I close my eyes I can hear the Patoosh, patoosh, Patoosh, patoosh of the tracks…
“Ahhhhhh, SIGH!” Nostalgia wafts over the channel.
So now we need to get the red Telefon boxes back, along with the red post boxes and our new king needs a royal yacht.
I suggest something built along the lines of HMS Trincomalee.
I know and I reckon I’ve nailed down the cause of all the Brit’s wallowing in the past & why Jacob Rees-Mogg MP continues to retain a majority in his home constituency of North East Somerset since 2010.
Of course the reason stands out a mile - namely the boundary changes to his North East Somerset constituency ( in 2010 ) took in the landed gentry from the 18th century.
Which explains why the Bond film makers had to scour the English countryside for a Heritage Railway line fit for the purpose of representing Steam trains in the DDR, for the Roger Moore Bond film Octopussy back in 1983.
A lot of the DDR steam trains were repurposed into stationary units supplying hot water, heat and power to the Plattenbausiedlungen or the prefabricated highrise buildings and indeed it was the Swiss how pioneered the oil fired steam locomotive a while back.
