Steel cages for dogs

One of my neighbours has got himself mammut type dog. A big female one. Very friendly animal, a beautiful animal.

About a week after he got her he had a 3mx3m cage build in his garden and the poor animal has been locked in there since. No shade, a water bowl and an old piece of carpet to lay on. Concrete floor.

And yes, he also has a huge fenced garden, ah*le he must be.

Are there any laws in this country about this sort of thing?

Are there any laws against me taking some pictures of it and posting them on the web for the animal activists to come share their views on the correct way to treat our furry friends.

This is illegal, you can either try and bring it up with your neighbours or call the police.

SR 455.1, the Tierschutzverordnung (TSchV) addresses appropriate social contact, movement, and kenneling conditions for dogs. Articles 70, Sozialkontakt, Art 71 Bewegung, and Art 72, Unterkunft und Boden are among the relevant bits and bobs of the legislation. Also Table 10 of the Anhang, page 113, lays out minimum space requirements.

If you believe that the dog is being mistreated:

If there is not immediate mortal danger, make a report to the cantonal Veterinäramt. I am not sure if you can report anonymously, or if you need to leave your name.

If an animal is in mortal danger, call the police in the first instance.

If the animal is in immediate mortal danger and you believe in good faith that the animal will die before the police arrive, you may take limited steps, but it is always wisest, and in your interest to protect you from accusations, to tell the police what steps you will take, get their permission, and enlist witnesses. This applies to situations like a dog locked in a boiling hot car, unable to breathe.

Switzerland has some of the best animal protection legislation on the books... but unfortunately enforcement is not always what one would like to see, and resources behind enforcement are not always available.

I've actually been asked quite a few times in conversation with locals if our dog lives outside.. You know just these passing conversations with other dog walkers .. Ours is a little Frenchie too, hardly an outside living dog.

So I actually assumed it was a pretty common thing here.

I've never noticed a dog cage outside around the village but many little cat houses.
