Happily I'm not so desperate for the taste of home that I feel compelled to separate myself from my arm and leg for a box of Christmas crackers and a pack of brown sugar.
Brown sugar (loose grain) is not the same as the sticky brown sugar being discussed here and on the famous thread "Where can I find brown sugar".
It is a brown sugar that is mixed with molasses . That is what gives it the sticky effect. It is something typically found in North American and the UK (possibly elsewhere). It is used in many baking recipes and on porridge (which some people love and others hate) at breakfast time.
Since it is not used in Europe, it is normally quite hard to find, except from expat shops that cater to the English or North Americans.
Regular loose brown sugar can normally be found in any European grocery store.
Seville oranges for marmalade making
I got mine last year from the Reformhaus in Marktplatz, Basel. I ordered them as I wanted 5 kg and they got them in within days. They started being available around Christmas but I bought them end Jan. Funnily enough they were marked as from Italy. The marmalade was delicious .. onto the last few jars now.
It is made from cane sugar that is filtered to remove impurities then crystallized without further treatment to maintain the molasses taste that is in fact coming from the cane sugar.
Here in CH, the white sugar is coming from beets.
Photos show you the "clumping" that you get vs. a regular dry sugar.

Thanks for the tip.
