at the moment Sunrise is making a good deal on their 5G solution (20chf/month, full speed and not data limit).
With the Oppo modem (Oppo CPE T1a 5G), this make a very attractive solution compared to the ADSL (fiber doesn't reach our area).
For sure, I tested the 5G connection with a cellphone (One+ Nord 2 5G) and a yallo card; but I have mixed feelings about the results.
Outside the house, about 15meter in the parc (no obstacle between the antenna and me), I reach amazing 310Mbps Down and 46 Mbps Up. But the signal degrades dramatically when I get inside the house (less than 10 Mbps Down): I know it's related to the high frequency they use for 5G that doesn't penetrate even glass. But it's very frustrating to see the antenna 50m away from the window and see theses results.
Now my question, is someone have experience with the Sunrise/UPC Oppo modem? Is the antenna of the modem better than a cellphone (of course, if you read the Oppo website it is...)? Anyone has tried the Sunrise 5G offer for home internet?
Of course, Sunrise doesn't allow testing before buying, witch is very annoying for technology like 5G.
Not what you might want to hear. But: Salt has an explicit 5G "fixed line" offer for people without fiber at home. Costs the same as the standard fiber offer
It DOES include a modem with an external antenna right away, so from that point of view it's elaborated enough to ensure a proper connection without the additional issues with walls etc.. I doubt those issues can be overcome with whatever "good" indoor routers alone.
I think the offer underlines the necessity of an outdoor antenna, in order to be able to get a proper solution and not a half-baked promise of "fast" internet.
I have it and I get 200mb or more...it is not even close to the window...but Sunrise or Salt...it really depends on many factors. If you get a good corverage with your phone...then you should be fine with the 5G tower.
Sorry to spoil the party - but rain screws with 5g signals more than 3g and 4g. its because its in the mmWave range of spectrum (milimeters like microwaves, as signal hitting a water droplet can get scatterered by it)
I have SIM based wifi which feeds of the 3/4g tower nearby and in middle to heavy rain the signal degrades and internet slows.
but rain affacts 5G signals much more - if you cant see the tower because its raining so hard, expect to have almost no signal/bandwidth to your SIM card in the receiving device, but an antenna might help.
Even trees in the way will weaken/scatter the signal to some extent
would be very interested to hear actual 5g user expericnes DURING RAIN as this is based on the science of 5g, and whats I have read, not personal observation on 5g (but it down efect 3/4g for me).
I have yallo 5G home internet as I basically have no other option. Had to walk a bit around the apartment to find the best spot for the router, but it's fine. Speeds vary, from 250Mbps/30Mbps to 450Mbps/50Mbps. Outside the speed reaches 1000Mbps/90Mbps.
Rain doesn't seem to affect the speed in any way, yet it's true the speed varies. I think it's more about the time of day and overall tower capacity. I've been googling a bit to understand what modem should I buy for the best reception and I've learned that 5G mmWave is not implemented in Switzerland so I bought cheaper modem with 5G SA only (I took only the SIM from yallo).
Overall internet is really good for everything I use: web, zoom, netflix. I've recently tried GeforceNow. It worked but The Witcher 3 was somehow ignoring mouse clicks sometimes where mouse moves were responsive all the time. I've tested the free account only twice, later GFN was displaying that I'm XXXX in the long queue to the free servers. I think they have some bonus for first time testers, but it wasn't enough time for me to convince me so I gave up on the idea completely and bought a console.
