Supermarkets fighting theft with bag searches?

The employee does something that makes the machine change to a different screen and that’s when they scan something random. I’ve never been charged twice from a check.

The checks are very recent at my local Coop, maybe within the last month? Either that or they tightened up the frequency of how often the checks are done.

I’m a semi-fan of self-checkout. Most of the time I use a hand basket instead of a trolley. Those times, it’s faster for me to scan my few items and zip out the door instead of following the steps which Axa outlined so well. If I have a trolley or alcohol, I go to the cashier.

That’s quite what they’re intended for, purchases with less than a dozen items or so. It’s why they have no area to deposit lots of items.

Ha ha. Migros fantasy. Gossip when there are 10 people standing behind you waiting to pay.

Wrong. Its because if there is a spot check then its very difficult if they have a full trolley.

Nope you’re wrong. Those “Plauderkassen” seem to work. I know only about one in Basel though. The people behind you at a “Plauderkasse” are more likely people waiting to have a chat too. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

These are getting more often in my home country as well. A lot of people use them when they want to have a chat. Good thing I think, so many people are lonely and looking forward to a chat there.

They only check about 10-12 items from the full trolley.

There is anyhow no space to place all the contents from a full trolley.

Only if you have the correct attire.

If you get randomly chosen for a full rescan and have a trolley full of stuff you’ve scanned using the handheld scanner they send you to a manned checkout to do it.
It doesn’t happen often though, we’ve only ever had it happen once.

I went to REWE at Weil Am Rhein a few times when we were allowed to go cross border during the pandemic. They asked to look in your bags and had mirrors positioned above the checkouts which was a bit intimidating tbh.

When I go back to Scotland the number of shoplifters I see is ridiculous. They’re usually addicts, but I did see a girl of about 16 with a pram nicking baby stuff in TK Maxx, she had one of those tag removal tools. She was quite blasé about it as she knew I’d seen her, she was putting the baby clothes under the pram cover but she took one item to the till and paid for it. Britain has given up on shoplifters so there’s no point on reporting them. You might end up being stabbed for your trouble.
I did a Christmas stint in Marks and Spencer to earn some extra money back in 2003 as I’d just moved back to Scotland from London and was using it as a fill in until I got a job that suited my experience and qualifications. The store I was in was classed as a small local store but it lost 12k to theft every month, mainly booze. We were told never to approach shoplifters and to alert the security guard. He was about 5ft tall and 8 stones, his hat was huge by comparison
The rear entrance/exit doors were in the main shopping mall and we used to get people running through being chased by security guys from other shops where they’d been stealing.
I’ve got this experience to look forward to in another week as I’m going to my house for 10 days to get it ready for winter. Between spotting shoplifters and the problems with the illegal Airbnb that’s running in the courtyard where my house is it should be an entertaining (not) time. Owner has been warned by both the Local Authority and the Scottish Government to cease trading but has chosen to ignore it.

Reminds me of this video:

I admit, I’ve rarely felt more satisfied and entertained after watching a video.

An idiot trying to steal from a shop. But why was the emergency exit locked?

Apparently, it’s a magnetic release. When the fire-alarm is pulled, the lock is released. Or you have to push it for 20+ seconds.

The guy in question didn’t have that patience.

oh, sorry. Didn’t see that.
