Must whole-heartedly agree!! I have driven in Johannesburg, Mumbai, ROME!!, London, New York, Paris and Bangkok. Swissies are kaak drivers... Personal pet-hates are: 1) highway drivers who overtake and then pull in front of you almost pushing you off the road, 2) Bicycle and Motorbike drivers blatant and often dangerous disregard for road rules and 3) pedestrians who own the road. Swiss pedestrians should go to South Africa and try their zebra crossing antics, apart from the fact that there are way too many pedestrain crossings. Physics don't seem to apply to swiss pedestrians...
Thanks for the venting, needed to get that off my chest
Nearly got run over today on the pedestrian crossing on Forchstrasse/Kreuzplatz. A "man in tights" (see the Sechseläuten thread) must have mistaken the accelerator with the break pedal - probably his cuban heels got in the way.
I was already well into the middle of the road, and the car came suddenly whizzing up behind me and missed me by about an inch. The funny thing was, I hardly noticed until I felt the air passing by so quickly and saw the horrified looks on other people's faces on the other side of the road.
Needless to say, the driver then came to a halt some 5 meters later at a red light at Kreuzplatz.
Just pulling your leg man actually used public for a fair amount of time, but eventually decided to get a car (South African in me...), missed being independant and plus really missed my jeep
Glad you are okay, Crumbs. Hope they don't put the stockinged fool in charge of one of those horses racing round the böörg. It'll either be trampled spectators or a barbequed steed!
I cannot believe you said that. The Swiss are famous for their correct use of pedestrian crossings. I have received disapproving looks and have even been pulled back by an old lady when atempting to nip across a clear road on a red light. Conversely, in South Africa I was nearly mown down many a time when crossing on a green light.
The fact that many a pedestrian feel like there is a barrier of protection at that Zebra crossing (non-light ones) and that all vehicles have good brakes. Always amazed me that people step on the zebra crossing in front of a very heavy vehicle going 35 kmph expecting that because it is a rule the drivers will stop. They place their life in the hands of a trusting a driver to follow the rules.
The rule is not like that at all. The pedestrian has to wait for the vehicle to stop before crossing. That is how we teach the kindergarten kids so you'd think adults would get it.
I was referring; firstly to the fact that there are more pedestrian crossings than needed. Secondly, the many times where I have had to hit the brakes when a pedestrians merely glanced at the crossing. Have also had many people who don't even look if there is a car coming. Basically means I have to drive at 20km/h always so that I can stop in time.
ALTHOUGH, MUST ADMIT, HAVE FOUND THE OLDER GENERATION TO BE SOME OF THE MOST COURTEOUS PEOPLE I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED, EVEN SMILING. COURTESY GOES A LONG WAY. I BEND OVER BACKWARDS FOR SOMEONE IF THEY ARE COURTEOUS TO ME, AND ALWAYS AM COURTEOUS FIRST. Also admit, Zurich is an extreme, outlying towns are a lot better.
As for South Africa, would completely agree, that's why I used my car and didn't cross the road much, but at least people looked before crossing (didn't help sometimes, but oh well, that's SA, never assume anything)
You a 4x4 fan? Have a mate who has a defender, we are going to niederbipp for some offroading Seeing its a defender, might have to help him when he gets stck though
