Then, as a thought experiment, another German land, French or Italian region? Don’t say it is too far fetched, suffice to say Euro was purely political mean of tighter integration. It is not 0 or 1, modern times, more complex arrangements, but if bigger were automatically better you’d not have bad examples of France or Italy in decades long malaise.

I meant that comprehensive trade deal that is eventually becoming a federal state is not a sure success, it might be a road to misery as well.
Of course the Euro doesn’t help but it’s not the main problem.
Italy clearly has a huge problem with the age pyramid and workforce strength. The same applies to the rest of western/southern Europe, it’s just the most pronounced in Italy.
I don’t like the idea of EU becoming a federal state either. It already has too much power. CH is not a part of it though, I don’t understand why you’re worried.
