Taking the kids for fondue

I always put this in the same category as avoiding draughts as they caused viral illnesses.

In won't make a difference though.

My mum always wondered about the benefits of tea (green tea specially). She was always puzzled how her friends of Chinese descent ate a lot of fatty food but never got fat. Her non-scientific conclusion was that they drank copious amounts of tea with their meals

I'm not sure about the specific effect of green tea (has been rumoured to raise metabolism) but would think the black tea/wine drink recommendations as being suited to assist the fondue once eaten, has to do with tannins. It has been a while since I did any organic chemistry, but given the formulas for whey/rennet and tannin, someone could probably postulate a beneficial interaction

And don't forget fish fondue.

The what?!?!

Hey, I was super-scared of the thing almost into my twenties ;-)

Truth is, once that pot of oil would have been drained over the table and the oil had started burning, there's little we could have done other than getting our coats and wait outside for the fire-engines to turn up....

I though a Fondue Chinoise was always fish until we moved to Switzerland.

There's tomato fondue too apparently.

Basically the word 'fondue' (which means melted) has become bastardised. Instead of being applied only to the melted cheese dish it's now used for almost any communal cooking pot meal, be it using broth, wine or oil, and (as the tomato one shows), one where you're dipping a loaded forkful of one ingredient into another, runnier ingredient to coat it.

Now I'm hungry.... might have to crack open one of those individual cheese fondue pots for supper.

It does rather resemble the communal fishing pond...particularly if the dipped item gets away And then there are more kissing customs

We took our kids out for Fondue and they were 1 and 3 at the time! It was a handful at that age....flames seem to attract more than just mosquitos! They found the Fondue a bit too strong in flavour but there was a small amount of Kirsch (or so they said!) Hope you find someplace to enjoy your first Swiss Fondue with the family!
