Normally there are a list of possible deductions on the tax pages of the cantonal website. Vaud is here: https://www.vd.ch/fileadmin/user_upload/organisation/dfin/aci/fichiers_pdf/Tableau_des_dĂ©ductions_2023.pdf. I find it a hand checklist to make sure I donât forget anything.
Financial support of other persons up to a certain amount.
An additional form in the tax declaration - Hilfblatt A - is used to claim these extra deductions. As a self-employed English teacher, I used to claim my computer, âofficeâ space at home, travel etc.
Tax deductions for health insurance. I seem to remember doing this in Zurich, but not in Basel-Land. Is this included in some kind of pauschal in BL tax return, or did I just forget to claim it?
Working through my tax return preparation and I realize I have a new expense on my hands that I did not encounter before â university tuition fees for my child (age group 20-25 years), who I am supporting financially.
Could you say if these tuition fees may be deductible ?
I know that I can deduct professional education expenses for myself and my spouse but unsure about childâs university expenses.
Thank you. Yes familiar with this document. Great you shared this though. I was wondering if university/tuition charges may be deducted in addition to these flat rate deductions. I guess not âŠ
Look just try it. Worse case this gets corrected by the tax authority. Nothing else will happen.
I am currently trying to do the tax return in Zug, and it looks as though property renovations, such as the bathroom, cannot be deducted as maintenance but instead are only treated as increasing the property value. Does anyone else know what can be claimed from this as maintenance or how to put it on the tax form?
To reply to my own post, in case it helps anyone else. I got an answer from the tax office. They say that 2/3 of the cost of the renovation can be claimed as maintenance for replacing like for like, and 1/3 must be treated as increasing the property value. I donât know whether all Kantons would treat this in the same way.
Normally the local authorities should have guidance. Here is a detailed schedule for BaselLand:
Here, under 5.2 it would be fully deductible as modernization of similar standard.
If you keep detailed cost schedules, you can easily prove replacement of similar value e.g. if toilet is replaced with another toilet and not the ToiletAutomatic2000 with additional bum drying features.
Likewise if you replace kitchen counter top from laminate to laminate, it should be fully deductible, whereas laminate to granite could be argued to be an upgrade to a higher standard and here only 2/3 deductible.
I strongly suspect most if not all of your bathroom renovation should be fully deductible.
I fully deducted most renovations. I threw in the odd 2/3 1/3 split here and there to show the tax authorities that I was properly considering it to avoid them looking into details and challenging the cost splits I made.
How would anybody prove the quality of what was replaced?
Gone is gone.
Edit: if you replace some things with lower quality does that give you a credit versus things of higher quality.
